Adding value where I can! I had a great call a couple nights ago with Marco Barbaro. His daughter was debating going to college for Civil Engineering so Marco and I hopped on zoom and made a 45 minute recording over this subject matter. I shed light on the college courses, engineering exams, the day-to-day roles and projects a civil engineer performs, the different focus areas inside engineering, the different career paths within the industry she could take, and so much more. Marco's daughter was very excited and happy to have more insight into this industry. It's scary for high school students to make life decisions about what career paths to choose and then to pick which college best supports that career, especially when they don't have a lot of information on these careers. Interviewing all industries is extremely beneficial for all high schools and parents. Engineering is a great career path and I was happy to share more about the industry. I love adding value where I can! I'm thankful for joining the Make It Happen Mastermind Group in March 2023. I joined in order to take down larger goals! Our December issue of Engage is now available, pulling together all the headline news from the previous couple of months, including: 🔹 The publication of the competence tables for The UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence and Commitment contextualised for Higher-Risk Buildings (UK-SPEC HRB). These detail how competence and commitment requirements apply to HRB registration and provide a shared framework for a range of engineering disciplines to deliver safe buildings throughout the building life cycle. A very important milestone that supports the recommendations from Dame Judith Hackitt’s Building A Safer Future report following the Grenfell Tower tragedy in 2017. 🔹 The launch of our new 'Guidance Note on supporting neurodivergent applicants for registration' which has been written by an Engineering Council working group composed of practising engineers with lived experience of neurodivergent traits and conditions, and Licensee staff working on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and related topics. 🔹 Details on the UK Professional Qualifications Act 2022 (PQ Act) which came into force on 1 December 2023. The PQ Act, as announced by the Government’s Department for Business and Trade (DBT), revokes the UK version of the European Union (Recognition of Professional Qualifications) Regulations 2015 (S.I. 2015/2059). As engineering is regarded as a Chartered Profession that is not regulated in law, from 1 December, the Engineering Council and Licensees will be free to maintain pathways for recognition for professionals from the EU/EEA without any additional requirements in law. 🔹 Former Labour and Conservative ministers Lord Knight and Lord Willetts, with support from our colleagues at EngineeringUK, have launched a five-point plan for growing and sustaining engineering and technology apprenticeships for young people. Recognising the critical importance of engineering and technology for the UK and the sector’s growing workforce needs, the new report is the culmination of a comprehensive inquiry that aims to find solutions to reverse the decline in apprenticeship starts that have been seen in the sector over recent years. 🔹 News that EngC registrants were among the recipients of several recent PEI awards including Professor Tom Crick MBE PhD FHEA FBCS CEng CSci FAcSS, one of three recipients of the BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT Lovelace Medal and Daniel Wei Liang Vong BEng (Hons) BSc IEng MIET, Director at BAWA Cane and Professor Wai Yie Leong CEng FIET, Pro-Vice Chancellor at INTI International University, who were among the world’s top 11 engineers and technologists recognised at the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Awards, which were held on 20 October in London. https://lnkd.in/eXkqpHJT

Today, I had the wonderful opportunity to visit my alma mater and catch up over coffee with the Head of the Department and the Principal. It was a nostalgic experience, but it highlighted some critical engineering education trends. During our conversation, it became evident that admissions in Civil Engineering are on the decline. Students are increasingly drawn towards Computer Science and Data Science, driven by the allure of higher pay and better work-life balance. Changing Industry Demands: The rise of technology and data-driven decision-making is reshaping career preferences. Students are gravitating towards fields that promise lucrative opportunities and growth. Economic Factors Future of Traditional Engineering: While tech fields are booming, it's crucial to remember the foundational importance of traditional engineering disciplines like Civil Engineering. There's an urgent need to innovate and adapt these fields to modern expectations and to highlight their critical role in sustainable development and smart city planning. Here’s how you can incorporate this habit into your life: 1. Visualize Your Goals: Start by imagining your ideal future. What do you want to achieve in your personal and professional life? This vision acts as a guiding star, providing direction and purpose. 2. Set Clear Objectives: Break down your vision into specific, measurable objectives. These should be achievable, relevant, and time-bound. For instance, if your goal is career advancement, set milestones such as acquiring new skills, networking, and gaining relevant experience. 3. Create a Plan: Develop a step-by-step plan to reach your objectives. Identify the resources you need, potential obstacles, and strategies to overcome them. How do you manage your time to stay aligned with your purpose? 🤔 Hello everyone, I’m Mahdieh. It’s been 2 years since I graduated from UNSW with a civil engineering degree. After finishing university, I felt a void. I had dedicated 4 years to my studies, with half of that time during the COVID-19 pandemic. I love my work, the organisation I’m part of, and the people and culture there. However, outside of work, I’ve been focusing on personal growth, trying new things, and discovering my purpose in life. As an extrovert, I’m always on the go and rarely take time to relax. This often leads me to overestimate my time and take on more than I can handle. Sometimes, I spend too much time on activities that don’t truly fulfill me. I am working on finding a balance and instilling positive habits while breaking those that don't align with my growth. I know many of you might be going through similar experiences, whether you’re at a different stage in your life or facing different challenges. I’d love to hear your insights on managing time and expectations while striving to achieve your professional and personal goals.
