It’s happening in every sport, in nearly every market, at every level: to help finance a new stadium or arena and increase revenue, professional sports teams—and some colleges—are developing mixed-use commercial real estate districts around their venues and maintaining ownership in the assets, a concept known as stadium anchored mixed use development. Stadium anchored development is blurring the lines between professional sports and commercial real estate—and has become a somewhat controversial topic for cities, states and taxpayers— so we decided to cover the topic in an on-going blog series. Part 1 in our series is on our hometown Chicago Bears’ on-going quest to build a new stadium and develop a surrounding mixed-use development and the factors that gave rise to the stadium district trend. The redevelopment of White Stadium in Boston is experiencing a significant cost increase, now estimated at $91M, up from an initial $50M, per the Boston Globe Media ⚽ This rise in cost is due to substantial design changes driven by community feedback and escalating construction expenses. City officials noted that their contribution represents less than half of the total cost, meaning the entire project could approach $200M. BOS Nation FC, the NWSL club, will cover the remaining costs, which include converting the aging 1940s stadium into a modern 10,000-seat arena with updated facilities for both the team and Boston Public Schools athletics. #SportsDevelopment #StadiumRenovation #Boston #BOSNationFC #PublicPrivatePartnership
