I had an interesting conversation with a candidate yesterday that got me thinking. 💭 We discussed the best steps for their career moving forward. They’re at a point where they feel there’s limited growth within their current role and aren’t completely satisfied with the compensation. On one hand, they could pursue a permanent role that offers the pay increase and broader learning opportunities they’re after, which would benefit them in the long term. Alternatively, they have the option to go contracting, where they could earn significantly more and gain exposure to a wider range of environments. What I found challenging was weighing the risks up - given the current market volatility, is it smarter to opt for a permanent role where they could still face uncertainty if business slows down? Or go for something like a defense contract, which tends to offer much more security (once the contracts are locked in, there's not normally much risk with those falling through)? I'd love to hear what other people think, from people who are maybe going through these scenarios themselves. My aim is to advise people the best I can, so I'd rather have the full picture before doing so :)

The Fire Dudes Llc W: www.thefiredudes.net The quote "hire on character, train on skills" emphasizes the importance of prioritizing personal attributes over technical expertise when hiring employees. It suggests that character traits such as integrity, work ethic, and attitude are fundamental for long-term success and team cohesion. These qualities often determine how well an individual will fit within a company’s culture and contribute to its goals. Skills, on the other hand, can be taught and developed over time through training and experience. By focusing on hiring individuals with strong character, you invest in people who are likely to be motivated, reliable, and adaptable. Once hired, these individuals can be trained to acquire the specific skills required for their roles. This approach not only fosters a positive and collaborative work environment but also ensures that employees are aligned with the company’s values and vision from the outset. In essence, hiring for character helps build a solid foundation for a strong and cohesive team, while training on skills ensures that employees are equipped with the technical knowledge needed to perform effectively in their positions. #franchising #businessdevelopment #thefiredudesllc #insuranceadjusters #restorationcontractors #firedamagesareanewbeggining #claimsadjuster #fieldadjuster #deskadjusters #insuranceclaims #vendors #certifiedfirm #ICRC #waterdamage #waterdamagerestoration #flooddamage #stormdamagespecialist #firedamage #hurricanedamagerestoration #moldrestoration #firedamageexperts #hurricaneprep #masterserviceagreement #HighTraffic #LederShitt #Innovation #Diversity #Sustainability #RemoteWork #Intrapreneurship #Technology #Career #TheFireDudesLLC #propertymanagers

Are most contractors ultimately looking to secure a permanent role? Not necessarily. Many contractors value the flexibility and diverse opportunities that contracting provides. Last month, I cold-called a candidate about an opportunity we had with a client. I knew his current project was wrapping up and the timing might be right. His response: “This sounds interesting, but I’m finishing phase 1 and the owner is likely giving us phase 2 of this project because we knocked phase 1 out of the park. I have a performance review next week and am expecting a promotion.” He was happy. He was loyal. He was staying put. From the outside looking in, it seemed like the company was a tough one to recruit from. They treated their staff well. They were like a house of bricks. But… During his performance review, his boss told him: •He needs to step it up if he wants to keep his job. •He will never get promoted at his company and he’s reached the ceiling. •Keeping a client happy is the bare minimum expectation and they better get phase 2. He immediately felt undervalued, and it shook him to his core. Guess who he called the next day? Me. He was no longer happy. He was no longer loyal. He was ready to explore that opportunity. In just one day, his outlook on his current company went from an anchor point in his career to a mere stepping stone. We got him in for an interview with our client on Thursday, and by Monday, he had accepted an offer. Within weeks, he had a few of his crew members follow him. And phase 2 of that project? It followed him, too. Turns out that owner only wanted to work with him. This is the type of individual I call a “Talent Lightning Rod.” Moral of the story? Don’t underestimate how valuable people can be. A house of bricks can turn into a house of cards pretty quickly. #construction #recruitment
