Tons of useful insight here. I have found that being an editor of popular articles is more gratifying than editing academic journals. It may be a fault of my own, but I could never find or motivate referees when I used to be a journal editor. On the other hand, it seems like our short-cut world renders much of your piece as almost quaint. Some writers may still want to hire a pre-submission editor for style and persuasion. But for APA compliance or ESL, why not just "hire" your local AI? As for getting an editor to "assess the rigor of your methodology"? This is the role of referees and dissertation advisers. Do you do this? When I connect with someone new here, I don't just look at their current job or follower count. I look all the way back to their very first job (or at least, the first one they list on LinkedIn). Why? I'm fascinated by how executives got to where they are today, and what job they wanted to do when they were young vs. what they are doing today. In my first job, I was a copy editor and production assistant at Ad Age magazine in Chicago. I was an English major who was really good at editing and proofreading and a decent writer, but since I didn't major in journalism, newsroom jobs weren't easy to get. Ad Age took a chance on me. In that job, I alternated between copy editing news stories and working in the production area to lay out and make final edits to the magazine's pages. Let me assure you, there's nothing that sparks more fear than being a 22-year-old calling up a grizzled reporter and telling them all the things that needed to be changed about their article. I learned a lot about overcoming doubts, having patience and standing up for myself. A couple years later, Ad Age's managing editor asked me to help her launch a new section of the magazine that would cover interactive marketing and media. I had no clue what that was, but it seemed interesting, so I said yes. What was your first job and how did it help you get where you are today?

As we get bigger, This has to happen. Each department needs to be more defined. When we were small, we didn't have clear roles of who did what. We didn't have enough people to divide up the work, so everyone was involved in every bit of the business. But as we've grown, we've had to redesign our departments. So everyone knows what bits they do, although there still is an element of helping with everything. This is why we're hiring a show writer who will sit under the writing team. They're going to work real closely with the strategy and production pieces of what we do. But, as the department grows, they can teach the other writers their skills, too. Which means everyone in the team can do more. And this goes for the whole team. As we grow and add more specialised skills, everyone can learn new skills, too. And the entire team gets stronger.

Greensboro Editor: The Assembly is seeking an experienced newsroom manager to help establish and lead our Greensboro bureau.  This person will be responsible for developing, assigning, and editing stories, as well as doing some of their own reporting and writing. The editor will anchor a weekly newsletter on issues of interest to Greensboro readers, with an eye for both accountability and narrative that can fill gaps in the existing news landscape. Responsibilities also include managing one reporting fellow and working with freelancers on stories of interest in the region and beyond. This role will report to the managing editor and work closely with others across the organization. The ideal candidate has at least 10 years of experience in journalism, including time spent reporting and editing. While they do not need experience in newsletters, they should be willing and interested in what it takes to develop the style and voice that will attract a loyal local readership. Before hiring an editor to help your business, It's important to know if they're a good fit for the job. One way to do that is to test their skills by sending your raw files and letting the pros show off their work. I've been editing since 2019 and I learned that each client has different preferences, and a good editor knows how to ask before jumping into action.
