15 Things I’ve Learned in 15 Years of Business #1: Your mission may stay the same, but how you achieve it shouldn’t. The name “The Good” came out of a mission to remove all bad digital experiences until only the good remain. (15 years later and I still think we’re clever 🤷🏻♂️) But what that looked like in 2009 isn’t anywhere close to what it looks like right now. Back then, we were essentially an ecommerce & Flash website development company. For us, it made sense that the development itself is only half the job. A website might look good, but you never truly know if it is accomplishing it's goals until you see how it functions when visitors start using it. So, we’d continue to monitor the site data after launch, and optimize our work to make sure the website does exactly what it needs to. At the time, you could go just about anywhere to get a nice looking website (that's even more true today). But we were the only ones following up to optimize. It worked so well, we saw an even better way to serve our company’s mission. We stopped developing sites from scratch and started focusing solely on conversion rate optimization, which is when The Good fully took off. For years, we were part of the pack that brought CRO to the mainstream and did work that we are still incredibly proud of. But in removing bad experiences so only the good remain, we found an even better approach: Digital Experience Optimization (DXO). We started to pull back from focusing solely on conversion rate to addressing issues that kept customers from getting to the conversion phase in the first place. We realized that to get rid of bad digital experiences, we needed to address the entire digital journey. Times change, and if you want to continue doing the work you set out for your company to do, you have to be willing to change how you do it.

1moIts a great idea that not many are fully leveraging, and at its core, it feels a little old school. The technology shouldn't drive the business, but the business should drive the tech — mindset first, technology second. Glad to see these mature ideas coming back around as people learn to diagnose what is tech hype and what is tech reality.
