“Why do you need electronic tooling compensation? Why not balance the tooling to zero?” These are questions we hear a lot, and the reason is that tooling compensation removes tooling unbalance and unbalance caused by eccentricity. Theoretically, once tooling compensation is carried out the rotor can be fitted to the tooling at any angular position and the unbalance measured is then the unbalance of the rotor. Golden rule for balancing: For every 1 micron a mass is moved off-center, 1 gmm of unbalance per kg of rotor mass will be measured. For instance, a 10 kg rotor moved off-center by 10 microns will result in 100 gmm of unbalance. Thus, electronic tooling compensation ensures precise balancing by compensating for residual unbalance in the tooling and any eccentricity.
