Head of Marketing, Evonite

Evonite. One word. Three syllables. Seven letters. AND a lot of time, thought, WhatsApp name storming, team debate, trips down verbal rabbit warrens, shortlists and rounds of voting to find the right name. It turns out naming a company in 2024 is no walk in the park. One of the biggest challenges is finding a name that is relevant, resonates with your business and is original. There’s no shortage of names out there but finding one that isn’t already being used is hard! Even when you come up with left field ideas, blend words together or add an incongruous adjective to a word, 9 times out of 10 somebody else, somewhere in the world, has got there first. Other key factors to consider include memorability, length, pronounceability, ease of spelling, how does it translate in other languages? and does it stand out amongst your competitors names? If you’re a team you also have to decide on a name that you all buy into. A bit like naming a baby, you rarely get your first choice but the name you choose is the result of collaboration between people. It’s an important ‘layer’ in the start of a business and once you’ve chosen it, it becomes you and you become it.
