Carers play a critical role in society, dedicating their time and energy to care for those in need. It is important to celebrate and recognise the amazing work that carers do regularly, not just on special occasions. The impact of carers is far-reaching, as they enhance the lives of many individuals by providing love, support, and essential care. By raising awareness about the importance of carers and the invaluable role they play in our communities, we can ensure that they receive the recognition and support they deserve. Celebrating carers not only acknowledges their hard work and sacrifices also raises awareness about the challenges they face the need for more resources and support. Often, the work of carers goes unnoticed or underappreciated, but their contributions are immeasurable. By highlighting the importance of carers and the positive impact they have on the lives of those in their care, we can foster a greater sense of community and support for these unsung heroes. It is crucial to recognise the selflessness and dedication of carers and to continue to raise awareness about their vital role in enhancing the well-being and quality of life of those they care for. Celebrating carers regularly is essential to ensure that they receive the recognition and support they need to continue their important work.

As this week is #CarersWeek, it is important to consider the different responsibilities that employees have, juggling caring needs of others with their responsibilities at work. At Maxwell Hodge, we have different policies in place to support employees and make their caring responsibilities that little bit easier. This includes: ✔ Paid Dependants Leave ✔ Flexible Working ✔ Homeworking There is still more to be done to support employees but we have found that offering paid dependants leave has been of great assistance to our people, particularly for taking dependants to medical appointments, so that they don't have to worry about using annual leave or unpaid leave. For over 12 years, I've partnered with Carers Trust Solihull to host rejuvenating relaxation treatment events. (I also run in-person and online workshops around self-care for carers).   And for 2024 we're planning more sessions, including twilight sessions tailored for busy carers who are balancing full-time work with their caring responsibilities. 48% of carers are inactive, compared to 26% of all adults. This month we're highlighting Carers Active April, a campaign run by Carers UK to help make physical activity more fun, accessible and welcoming for carers. Carers play such an important role in society, helping to care for those that need it. Even when juggling these responsibilities, it’s important for carers to take time to look after themselves too. Sport England are recognising carers and the barriers they may face to being physically active. They understand flexibility is key and increasing physical activity can improve happiness. They are offering April Carers Month with a month full of relatable content including: “The weeks are themed as follows: Week one: Active living with a long term health condition Week two: Embracing the outdoors Week three: Movement and mental wellbeing Week four: Sport and leisure clubs in your area” More information is available on their website. It’s great to see the #inclusion of #carers and highlighting the need to ensure they have an opportunity to engage in physical activities and increased life balance. As a carer I value this focused approach understanding that when you care for someone you love your time is not your own.
