Representation matters. I have urged some organizations that I am involved in to diversify panels. I no longer want to attend any networking events when I see a panel with zero diversity. We can do better.   I am confident that I will get some comments saying that I am biased and discriminatory to visually look for “diversity” and insist on it. You’re right. My opinion is that diversity benefits all of us, and I will strive for it and fight for it. If you disagree, that’s your prerogative. I recently spoke with a young lawyer who finds male-dominated rooms intimidating. I get it. Especially when the men are talking about subjects that women may not be as interested in, like how the Broncos are going to do this year. (I'm a Lions fan...). I am intimidated when I attend an all-black church. And, I find, I am totally welcomed in. If you care about diversity, I offer these suggestions: 1. Listen and Act: Engage directly with people who are not as prevalent in the industry. Understand their perspectives and barriers. 2. Promote Flexibility: Offer networking opportunities at varied times to accommodate diverse schedules. 3. Advocate for Inclusion: Encourage event hosts to prioritize diverse representation, fostering welcoming environments for all. I want to provide opportunities for people who are in the minority, whether it be skin color, disabilities, gender or sexual preferences. Those things should not matter, but they do because historically society has excluded them.   I want to make positive change. If you care about this too, please comment below with your thoughts.   #diversity #inclusion #thriveinyourlife

A few weeks ago, we hosted a AAF Seattle event at DNA , talking about the state of DEI and our own commitments - in our company and community. As an LGBTQ+ and Black-owned  agency, we are not only diverse owned and led, but we believe in the power of diverse people, ideas and experiences to drive innovation, creativity, effectiveness and efficiency. However there has been a slow “quiet quitting” of DEI efforts across corporate America and a growing political drumbeat of blaming DEI for everything from faulty airplane doors, cargo ship accidents and even failures in security for a former president. I appreciate the 2024 Edelman Trust Barometer Special Report on Business and Racial Justice that documents the business benefit of diversity. Edelman finds that ONLY employers are trusted to address racism in the US and that employees expect their employers to continue to invest MORE in DEI today than ever before. I highly recommend the recent More in Common report, in collaboration with UCL Policy Lab and University of Oxford 'Finding a Balance: How to ensure Equality, Diversity and Inclusion is for everyone.' While the 'hyper-elite' may be engaged in a culture war over the concept or principle of ED&I, public opinion on EDI is very different to how EDI is normally discussed in political debate and the media.' ✔ 62% of the British public think ED&I is a good thing. ✔ The principle of ED&I work and activity is something most Britons view positively, some neutrally, and with only a much smaller minority believing it is a net negative. ✔ The public overall are more likely to believe ED&I creates fairer outcomes than that it rewards the undeserving. 👉The concerns that the public have about ED&I activity are explored in the report. They include: 👉 ED&I being invoked to chastise people. 👉 When concerns of certain 'overlooked groups' are ignored. 👉 Where initiatives aren't relevant to the institution where they take place. ✨ Key insight: People are inclined to support diversity and inclusion where it is relevant and actionable in their lives, rather than align themselves with more abstract debates that seek to litigate rights and wrongs at the level of general principle. https://lnkd.in/erGN6HFP

Diversity 1990s versus Diversity and Inclusion 2020s. In 1999, we accosted the industry for its lack of diversity. 🙏🏿 In 2024, it's crucial to acknowledge that denying individuals of color, Latin or Asian equal opportunities and respect perpetuates systemic racism. Remaining passive in the face of racist behavior only exacerbates the problem. Despite claims of progressiveness, Europe still grapples with deep-seated racism, making it challenging for black, Asian and Latin individuals to feel welcomed or pursue opportunities there. It's imperative for every company to actively combat racism and impose severe penalties for any discriminatory acts, including termination of employment. The lack of diversity in company celebrations and prestigious events reflects a pervasive issue of unequal opportunities and systemic bias.
