Why Is So Much Memorization Required for Medical School?? It’s no secret that medical students have to know vast amounts of information–everything from complex chemical processes to the symptoms of numerous diseases. A solid foundation of medical knowledge is essential to helping doctors succeed when they transition to clinical settings in residency programs and beyond. While it can be challenging to master the elaborate topics taught in medical school, tools such as mnemonics and other memorization techniques help commit the information to memory. A super big thanks to Taylor Crouch, Melissa Bradner, Laura Frankart, Jonathan Ebersole, and Beck Regan for their work in getting our paper just published before 2023 came to a close. Its entitled Interprofessional Active Learning for Chronic Pain: Transforming Student Learning from Recall to Application and was published in the Journal of Medical Education & Curricular Development. In the article, we identified 5 essential messages that health educators should teach students about treating patients with chronic pain and discussed the literature behind each of those messages. For each message, we provided sample interprofessional active learning activities and were lucky to have Beck Regan create amazing images like this one below.
