Eleven Madison Park My wife and I recently saved all of our pennies to eat at Eleven Madison Park, a three-Michelin-star restaurant and one of the best restaurants in the world. I became obsessed after watching The Bear, one of the real-life inspirations for the show, and reading the incredible Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara. There is so much that Unreasonable Hospitality and Eleven Madison Park can teach school systems. Curriculum is Food Eleven Madison Park is entirely vegan. They take ordinary fruits, vegetables, grains, etc., and make them into out-of-this-world dishes—things like onions, asparagus, and granola become “I will never eat again because no food will ever taste this good.” Curriculum is no different. Teachers take cold, verbose standards and make them into mind-blowing lessons. Yes, we need to ensure that our students eat their “vegetables,” but there is no reason we can’t serve them their veggies as “gai lan finished table-side with black truffle and myoga.” Give More than Expected Eleven Madison Park is known for going above and beyond for their guests and their exquisite attention to detail. That amazing scene from The Bear where Richie overhears guests saying they never got to try a Chicago pizza and then prepares one in the kitchen for the guest was New York hot dogs at Eleven Madison Park. What would it be like if we knew a student had a job interview after school and had a dry-cleaned suite waiting for them at dismissal?  What if the high school marching band greeted a teacher celebrating a 25-year “workaversary” on their way into the building? What if a principal who worked late the night before at a game had their favorite Starbucks drink and breakfast sandwich waiting for them on their desk when they got in? Happiness = Reality - Expectations  Make the Ordinary a Little “Extra”  Everything from how they fold your napkin when you leave the table to refilling your water glass, even how you receive the bill, is made a little bit “extra.” It reminded me of The Power of Moments by Chip and Dan Heath. No detail was spared. How can we take those transactional moments in education and make them extraordinary? How can we do something like taking attendance, passing out papers, or collecting exit tickets and make those little moments all students want to talk about the next day? #foodforthought
