Becoming a Founder: Work-Life Balance I always hated the phrase "work-life balance." It’s one of those corporate expressions that should be thrown in the bin alongside "double hatting" and "acting-up". (Praise for the Gen-Z's who are seemily rallying against these). I understand the good intention behind it. We do need to find balance in life, to make time for ourselves, families, and friends, all while climbing the corporate ladder. But its prevalence (at least through my career) highlights a glaring contradiction between words and action. We’re told to seek balance, but the demands of work often lead to burnout and unnecessary stress. Through one part of my career, I slept in the office regularly for several months. My workload was enormous, I did little else but work. I still remember crying after my mid year review, I felt helpless and unable to cope with the demands. I was told that I needed more stretch but also to manage my work-life balance (WTF!). I actually kept a pillow in my locker for my 2am naps. The impact on my mental health and my relationships was staggering. But I got a promotion, so I felt like I was winning. I wasn't. Move forwards almost a decade. In this photo, I am tired. I had barely slept because my newborn son has decided to become nocturnal. And honestly, my energy was running low. But also in this photo, I am beaming with happiness. Clare Mroz and Abbie Carter were being their usual hilarious selves, trying to make me feel like I was posing for the front cover of Tatler. I had spent the afternoon immersed in creative design and strategy with Rupert Pearce and Jaime Blakeley-Glover as we prepared for the launch of an exciting new collaboration. And my Wife had just arrived to walk with me to pick up my son from nursery. In that moment, despite the fatigue, I was in a place that made me truly happy. So, I don't think it is finding "balance" that makes us (me) happy. I think it is about the feeling of autonomy and control. There will always be moments of exhaustion and chaos, especially as a founder. But what I am learning is that it’s about finding ultimate fulfillment in the mix. It’s not about perfectly separating "work" and "life" but about making sure the things I work on and the people I spend time with add meaning to both. That’s where I find my happy place. (p.s. For anyone who has ever worked for me. If I have ever told you to find work-life balance, I am sorry. It was lazy management and a sign that I was not prepared) (p.p.s - Patch is a bloody brilliant workspace filled with lovely people) #founder #worklifebalance #startupjourney #parenthood #entrepreneurship #findingfulfillment
Meet Lewis Howard - Co-CEO of BRAE, a strategy and innovation consultancy dedicated to sustainability. Lewis lives in Twickenham with his wife, two sons, and their dog, Islay. When he's not at Patch, there’s a good chance you'll find him out running or exploring the local parks with him family! 🌲🍃 Get to know Lewis a little more👇✨ ⭐️ What motivates you? The early years of running BRAE have been all about finding love in what we do and exploring whatever interests us. It has been wonderful to shed the restrictions and constraints of my old corporate life. 🏡 What does ‘Work Near Home’ mean to you? Working from Patch has completely transformed my relationship with the office. My commute is a short walk, I can drop my son off at nursery, walk the dog, and commute to work with no stress. My mornings are not a race against the clock anymore, they are now quality family time that I get to enjoy. ❤️ Why do you love where you live? I love Twickenham and the surrounding areas, we are so lucky to be on a beautiful stretch of the Thames surrounded by Royal Parks. In 20 minutes I can be in central London enjoying all that it has to offer, or I can be in the middle of a woodland in the countryside. #meetthemember #twickenhamcommunity #patchmembers

Gathering for our 2023 company retreat in Manistee, Michigan was a significant moment for the OSB team considering our dynamic as a hybrid/remote workforce for now over three years. The experience of having everyone in the same room at the same time brought an invaluable dimension to our collaboration. Brainstorm sessions and collaborative conversations flowed with a natural ease, facilitated by the shared physical space. Being able to read each other's cues and engage in spontaneous discussions fostered a level of connection and synergy that is often challenging to achieve in a virtual setting. The retreat provided a platform for us to strengthen our bonds, exchange ideas, and collectively shape the trajectory of our company. As we have returned to our respective workspaces in the following months, the impact of our time together in Manistee lingers. The camaraderie and shared energy will undoubtedly amplify our collaborative efforts, showcasing the power of coming together in person. Helping wicked smart leaders elevate their leadership results while reducing stress and embracing their own unique strengths to gain meaningful success.
It’s so easy to get caught up in keeping strict professional boundaries that we can sometimes forget that getting to know your team away from their desk can really help them feel connected to both each other and the team’s mission. You have a hard working team! But they don’t seem to know each other very well. As a leader, it’s up to you to create opportunities for your team to experience something new together or facilitate ways for them to get to know each other better. When you have a team that knows and supports each other, you have a team that can thrive in even the toughest challenges. There’s a picture that still sits on the shelf in an office showcase… a raft full of people in white rapids. That rafting trip was the first one the office went on and they had to not only conquer the fear of being in the raft, but had to also listen to a guide instruct them while making sure no one was left in the water or fell overboard. The trip started with lots of laughter, both nervous and excited, and was soon replaced with keen concentration as the guide instructed them on how to remain safe as they faced higher-than-normal rapids. Those who were more nervous or scared had to rely on those ready to be brave and act should the raft turn over. The relief as they successfully navigated the rapids and arrived at their destination was shared via high fives and hugs. The picture was proof they did something scary together and it was referenced anytime things got tough on the next project. This type of bonding lives on past the event. Build these moments for your team! #LeadershipChallenge #TheLeadershipChallenge #Bonds #Experiences #SharedExperience #TeamBuilding
