Congratulations Reckitt on talking about The Gender Pain Gap, the perception of women’s pain and how we can tackle unconscious bias.
The ‘Gender Pain Gap’ refers to the fact that pain in women is more poorly understood and more mistreated compared to pain in men due to systemic gaps and biases.
The UK Government said in its recent ‘Women’s Health Strategy’ that a ‘male as default’ approach exists in research and clinical trials, which means less is known about pain conditions that predominantly affect women or about how conditions affect men and women differently.
In fact, according to Reckitt's study, 1 in 6 women experience severe pain every day, and women are in pain more often and more severely than men. “Women get more pain than men – we know that’s true for chronic pain.” says Bill Laughey, GP and Senior Medical Scientist.
Nurofen’s Gender Pain Gap Index Report revealed that women are waiting longer for a diagnosis than men, for the same type of pain. More needs to be done to understand women’s pain and how as a society, we can overcome the barriers to how women experience pain.
“30 to 40% of adolescents miss school because of period pain, and are missing their education because of their period pain.” Lynsey Peers, R&D Director.

As a woman in technology, I was there in the days of "must wear pantyhose" and "prefer you wear shoes with a heel". When being soft and empathetic meant you were weak. I kept knee highs in my drawer at work because one run on the top of your foot was frowned upon.
Seriously. All realities in my career.
I once had a woman executive say to me, "If you want to succeed in this chaos, you need to learn your super power and take up space. Don't let anyone invade your space."
Powerful words. And now, I not only take up my space, but I invite other women in so that they can build confidence to take up their own space.
Call to action: look around you and find someone you can invite into your space...
And burn those knee highs.
Empowered women, empowering women.
