“Men apply for a job when they meet only 60% of the qualifications, but women apply only if they meet 100% of them.” A well-known quote from a Hewlett Packard internal report, the hesitation that young women have when considering applying for technical positions needs to be addressed. I think it’s important for women to focus on our abilities and have the self-confidence to learn new skills and develop the resilience to approach challenges with agility and courage.
Last week I was honored to join the panel for STEM ConnectHER’s 2024 launch. Part of The Asia Foundation’s Future Skills Alliance, STEM ConnectHer is a program aimed at supporting young women pursuing STEM across the Asia-Pacific region through access to mentorship and professional development opportunities.
Joined by Richa Rauniar, Angeline Lin, and Sandy Walsh, we looked at strategic partnerships as a way to overcome the gender imbalance in STEM and create lasting pathways for young women to enter the field.
In the semiconductor industry, to successfully navigate emerging opportunities, it is important to recognize the power of skills-based hiring and building on your T-shaped skills - both interpersonal and technical. Cross-discipline expertise is essential to stand out in an increasingly competitive labor market. As data-driven marketing firm TechTarget notes, in STEM (especially IT), individuals with T-shaped skills are in high demand, as they can better balance the technical side of innovation and help cultivate a team culture that supports this innovative spirit.
Beyond individual abilities, mentoring is another crucial element for young women to engage with early in their careers. To support the ongoing development of top talent, organizations should strive to build mentoring movements within their companies and encourage the exchange of cross-generational ideas and experiences.
When women have the courage to share knowledge, try new experiences, and strive to learn every day, a world of opportunities will open up.
What do you do to support women in STEM?
