I've been speaking to a few investigators recently about what kind of training or previous work experience is best suited to a career as an investigator. Now back in the day the majority of investigators I came across were ex Police, HMRC or Military, certainly in the UK. As far as the USA was concerned there were far more lawyers who had moved across into the investigation space although a fair number of them had some previous experience in some part of the US Govt eg FBI, CIA etc. Nowadays far more of the investigators I come across are journalists or analysts from the financial services industry. Whilst there are still a number of lawyers involved in the investigation industry they tend to be more involved in the supervisory aspect of investigations but of course there are always exceptions. Whilst I certainly wouldn’t wish to cast aspersions on the innate ability of lawyers particularly those of us who are involved in fraud and asset recovery work, I am inclined to think that lawyers might not on the face of it be made of the right stuff to be a full time investigator. Most of us lawyers after all are risk averse. We are trained from birth almost to identify every possible aspect where there might be a liability and dig away until we are satisfied as to the risk:reward ratio. Investigators who come from other places (perhaps the Police being an exception) don't come at a problem from a what can go wrong perspective. They look at everything from a solution perspective. Then they look at what the obstacles are and how to overcome them. I have to confess had I known that a career in investigations could be so interesting and rewarding I might have saved my law lecturers a lot of grief and my family a shed load of money on tuition fees!
