We honor and celebrate National Minority Health Month (NMHM), established by Congress in April of 2022, with the following goals: 1. Promote educational efforts on the health problems currently facing minorities and other health disparity populations 2. Educate the public and health care professionals about health disparities, disease prevention and health promotion among minorities and other health disparity populations in the United States 3. Monitor our nation's progress toward the elimination of health care disparities. Collect and report data on health care access and utilization on patients by race, ethnicity and socioeconomic status. 4. the information gained should be disseminated to all health care professionals so that they may better communicate with all patients, regardless of race or ethnicity, without bias or prejudice. The COVID-19 pandemic proved that when it comes to ensuring public health in communities of color, faith-based organizations have a leading role to play. That’s why we’re proud to support the Health Equity Innovation Act (H.R.5520), which would provide crucial funding to community and faith-based organizations, enabling them to address persistent health disparities and chronic disease challenges in their communities. These targeted resources will support programs serving communities facing chronic health care disparities and inequities, addressing social determinants of health, and expanding access to culturally and linguistically appropriate care. We urge Congress to take this important step forward for public health and pass this legislation.

Thank you Dr Alisahah Jackson and CommonSpirit Health for your leadership addressing the unique health challenges, black communities face. According to a recent study by The Kaiser Foundation KFF .org "How Present-Day Health Disparities for Black People Are Linked to Past Policies and Events", by Samantha Artiga, Latoya Hill , and Marley Presiado Published: Feb 22, 2024 they conclude: "Today’s health and health care disparities are rooted in a long history of U.S. policies and events and reflect the ongoing impacts of racism at multiple levels, including in systems, structures, policies, and interpersonal interactions. Understanding this past and how it shapes present-day disparities can help inform and guide efforts to address them. It also is important to recognize the resilience of marginalized people in the face of these challenges and disparities and to consider how to build on their strengths by prioritizing community engagement and leadership to mitigate disparities and improve overall health and well-being. This brief examines how past policies and events are linked to present-day disparities among Black people in health care and health outcomes. According to the study, "Today, Black people face persistent disparities in health care and health outcomes. These include higher uninsured rates, being more likely to go without care due to cost, and worse reported health status. Their life expectancy is nearly five years shorter compared to White people (72.8 years vs. 77.5 years). Black infants have a more than two times higher infant mortality rate than White infants (10.6 per 1,000 v. 4.4 per 1,000 as of 2021), and Black people are nearly three times more likely than White people to die due to pregnancy-related reasons (39.9 vs. 14.1 per 100,000 live births between 2017-2019)." I am excited for the release of the annual CHCF policy poll. One interesting finding is perception on health equity...Californians report mixed views on progress toward racial equity in health care. Although 43% of Californians overall believe the state has made “a great deal of” or “some” progress in achieving racial and ethnic equity in the health care system in recent years, 44% of Black Californians and 33% of Latino/x Californians say the state has made “only a little progress” or “no progress at all.” https://lnkd.in/gtP6Umds
