🚨 Breaking News Alert: AI-Powered Russian Network Pushes Fake Political News 🚨 Security researchers have uncovered a major Russian disinformation campaign using generative AI (GenAI) to manipulate and weaponize content from major news outlets, aiming to influence Western voters. Dubbed “CopyCop” by Recorded Future, this network leverages large language model (LLM)-powered GenAI to plagiarize content from reputable sources, injecting political bias tailored for specific audiences. Key Points: Impacted Media: Al-Jazeera, Fox News, BBC, La Croix, TV5Monde, among others. Fake Sites: Legitimate sites spoofed on alternative domains (e.g., bbc-uk[.]news) and fictitious sites like London Crier and GB Geopolitics. Narratives: Divisive topics such as the Israel-Hamas conflict, Ukraine support, and government policy criticism. Examples: False claims about UK government policies and NATO plans. Election Concerns: With key elections in the UK and US approaching, there is heightened worry about GenAI-powered content swaying voter opinions. Clément Briens from Recorded Future highlighted the “unprecedented reach and effectiveness” of CopyCop’s tactics, urging proactive measures from media organizations and governments. Artificial intelligence (AI) is doping for #disinformation campaigns. The US magazine WIRED used the "Zelensky-Bugatti" campaign to analyze how an AI-supported disinformation campaign poisoned media channels worldwide within 24 hours. It concerned the claim by a #Russian disinformation outlet, Vérité Cachée, that the wife of Ukrainian head of state Volodymyr #Zelensky had bought a USD 4.8 million #Bugatti Tourbillon in Paris with American aid money. AI-generated footage in a car dealership illustrated this disinformation. Bugatti's fiery denial was lost in the flood of disinformation. McKenzie Sadeghi, NewsGuard's AI and foreign influence editor, summarises: "In 2016, a disinformation operation like this would likely have required an army of computer trolls. Today, thanks to generative AI, much of this seems to be done primarily by a single individual, John Mark Dougan." Vérité Cachée is part of a Russian disinformation network run by the former US-Marine John Mark Dougan, who now lives in Moscow, working with Russian think tanks. According to the disinformation analysis centre, Debunk.org, Russia spent $1.9 billion on propaganda last year. The concern is that AI, especially generative AI, will make this propaganda far more convincing, abundant and effective in its spread. However, AI also shows promise in countering this by helping us understand how disinformation is spread and how it influences opinions and behaviour. Crucially, it can aid in combating this disinformation more effectively. But this will only be possible if we acknowledge this as a genuine and serious threat to democracies – something we’ve been hesitant to do over the past decade – and focus adequate resources on it. The stakes are indeed high. 'Tokariuk, a Ukrainian journalist, disinformation researcher, and fellow at the Chatham House contemplated some of the key lessons learned from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In particular, how artificial intelligence (AI) and data are changing the landscape of modern warfare in real time. “Either you will start using artificial intelligence, or it will replace you. Artificial intelligence is an irreversible trend.” This quote was said by Mykhailo Fedorov, the minister of digital transformation in Ukraine, and Tokariuk repeated it to ground the ongoing invasion in the wider backdrop of the proliferation of this transformative technology. Foremost, Tokariuk points to how AI is being utilised by both Russian and Ukrainian forces in the battlefield. According to her, it helps analyse the vast amount of data coming from various sources, along with intelligence information in order to create a multi-layered picture of the situation on the ground. As we head into a very serious political season where fake news and disinformation campaigns will be amplified 100X by AI, I try to remind everyone that our community needs to be paying A LOT of attention to what is happening in other parts of the world with like-minded topics. This paper talks about the Russian and Chinese narratives for international audiences - both framing NATO as hostile actor influenced by the US that is to be blamed for the war in Ukraine, as well as - NATO’s expansion undermines European security, as Russia is forced to act against growing military threat along its borders. In Seattle we are home to some great platforms like Factal and Pendulum that are trying to 'fight the good fight' of keeping news honest and secure. We also have groups like truemedia.org sifting through the problem of identifying political deepfakes in social media using AI. When seeing isn't believing. What can a princess, AI, and a bot army tell us about our future and the product innovation we'll need? AI advances have launched us into the era of the deep fake. Bot armies already leverage social media to amplify the seeds of doubt. Bad actors don't even need to create deep fakes to propel us into massive conspiracy theory territory. Bad actors can propagate conspiracy theories without even creating deep fakes. How many cell phone shots of an event will we need to "verify" that something actually happened? Will our futures be dominated by live and in-person events?
