Visit Healthcare Careers U.S. News & World Report released its list of the 2024 Best Jobs, offering insights into the top career options across 17 different categories, including healthcare. Among the notable findings, the position of physical therapist has been ranked # 7 in the Best Health Care Jobs category, a slight decline from its # 3 position in the 2023 rankings, and it holds the # 30 spot among the 100 Best Jobs overall. The survey highlights that the profession of physical therapy offers significant flexibility in terms of alternative work schedules and work-life balance, along with above-average potential for salary growth and career advancement but with a higher-than-average level of stress compared to other occupations. Overall, occupational therapists secured the # 4 position in the Best Health Care Jobs category for 2024 and ranked # 19 among the 100 Best Jobs overall. Speech-language pathologists claimed the # 3 spot in the Best Health Care Jobs category and stood at # 10 in the overall ranking of the 100 Best Jobs for the year. Finding the best therapists comes down to understanding one KEY concept: Hiring vs Recruiting Hiring is the act of putting a job description out and saying "I need someone to fill this seat" Recruiting is communicating what your company does, why it's different, your core values, and why people love working there. People will either be attracted to that or not. The goal is to repel the people who DON'T like what you do and what you stand for. As a practice owner, you should ALWAYS be recruiting. Therapists, especially my private practice therapists, you're about to hire a new clinician on your team. How exciting! Here are a few things you can ask their references... The Basics (of course)... Can you describe the nature of your relationship with the candidate and how long you have known them? Not a question, but gain insight into their daily tasks and roles at their previous job. See if it is relevant to your current position. What are the candidate's strengths as a mental health clinician? In what areas does the candidate need further development or support? How does the candidate handle challenging or stressful situations in a clinical setting? Can you provide an example of a complex case or situation the candidate managed effectively? More Details... How does the candidate collaborate with colleagues and other professionals in a clinical setting? How does the candidate communicate with clients and their families? Can you describe the candidate's approach to multicultural competence and working with clients from diverse backgrounds? How does the candidate handle ethical dilemmas, mental health crises or conflicts in a clinical setting? How does the candidate approach assessment and diagnosis in their clinical work? How does the candidate stay current with developments in the field of mental health? Can you speak to the candidate's ability to work independently and as part of a team? How does the candidate approach self-care/maintain their own well-being and professional boundaries? Would you hire or recommend this candidate for a similar position in the future? Why or why not? Consider the candidate's suitability in terms of their cultural competence, clinical skills, professionalism, and potential for training and supervising others.  Ask yourself, "Would I want this person I'm considering hiring to be my therapist?"
