Recreation and Parks Department, City of Annapolis

How fitting during Park and Recreation Month that Annapolis Recreation and Parks Director Roslyn Johnson visited Capitol Hill today with other Parks and Recreation Directors, Business Leaders, and National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Board members from around the country to advocate for the department. Johnson gave legislators an update on all that is happening in Annapolis, including how Recreation and Parks is the second largest provider of meals for youth—after the public school system—but during COVID, the department was actually the largest provider. There was also a 387 percent increase in park usership during COVID in Anne Arundel County, which is why its important for HR 6492 and S 843-- The Great Outdoors for All Act to finally be passed during this session of Congress. Hopefully legislators will pass the Act, codifying equitable access to parks for future generations. Legislators were also asked to support funding for recreation and parks, such as appropriations like the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF). Director Johnson noted that Maryland’s delegation is very supportive of parks and recreation. #WhereYouBelong
