If I could go back in time, these are the 7 things I wish I knew about Product Management. (It would have saved me a lot of wasted time and effort.) 1) There are no perfect solutions, only good trade-offs. Every product decision involves weighing pros and cons. Learn to make the best calls. Don't search for a mythical "perfect" answer. Learn to make peace with trade-off decisions. 2) You can't please every user or stakeholder. Priorities from different groups will inevitably clash. Stay laser-focused on your key user personas. And primary business objectives when you hit roadblocks. Know when to politely push back. 3) Get out of the building and talk to users. No amount of analytics or secondhand info can replace this. You need to observe how they truly behave. And what their unstated needs are. In-person research provides essential context. 4) Over-communicate constantly. Repeat important messages ad nauseam. Across multiple channels and mediums. Until you're sick of hearing yourself. Erring on the side of over-communication prevents assumptions and confusion. 5) Timelines will slip, expect it. Even with perfect planning, dates will get pushed. Dependencies, blockers and scope creep happen. Build in buffer time upfront. Under-promise on targets, then work to over-deliver. 6) Learn to say "No" diplomatically. You simply cannot build everything requested. You have to push back sometimes. In a polite, principled way. "No" allows you to retain focus. 7) Celebrate small wins along the way. Product work is a marathon. Big breakthroughs are thrilling but rare. Appreciate incremental progress too.
