They offer aspiring business owners the opportunity to use a franchise’s brand name and proven business model, while still having the freedom and flexibility that come from being your own boss. JD&A has over 15 years’ experience in supporting franchisees as you start and grow your business, from helping you find the brand that best fits your goals to helping you obtain the funding you need to start and build your new venture. How Do Franchises Work? There are two parties in a franchise relationship: the franchisor (the business brand, e.g., McDonald’s, 9Round Fitness, etc.) and the franchisee (the individual(s) who will own and operate the business). After submitting an application and being approved, a franchisee pays the franchisor an initial fee, plus ongoing royalties. In return, the franchisor gives the franchisee the right to sell their products/services using their trademarked name(s), in addition to offering continued training, support, and access to their proprietary business system. Inside the industry, franchisors are known as “zors,” and franchisees are known as “zees.” Do They Succeed? While franchises aren’t necessarily more likely to succeed than start-ups or buying an existing business (and they still require the same amount of hard work), they do offer a specific set of steps to build a business that’s been proven successful in the past. Some brands have stricter guidelines in how franchisees run their business, while others are more lenient. Initial franchise fees can also range from a few thousand dollars to a few million dollars for larger, well-known brands. It’s up to the franchisee to determine what kind of franchise brand best fits their personality and their goals. Derek’s Story In our industry, we refer to the people we work with as candidates. One of the most memorable is Derek. When we first began working together, he was in his thirties—already quite successful—in a mid-level management position in I.T. But he was so done with corporate. He saw the writing on the wall that this was not for him, especially since he wasn’t so sure that this ‘corporate ladder’ was the one he wanted to climb. He was also tired of being behind a desk all day and wanted to be out and about. I mean, we only get one life. I got to know Derek and his wife well. Like most spouses, she was hesitant to engage at first, having her own set of concerns which included two kids under the age of 7. She was worried about him changing careers and she was also thinking, who is this person advising him? But over time, we got to know each other well. She became comfortable with the process, especially as I made sure to really listen and learn about both their desires. I’m happy to say that today Derek is multiple years into his new life, and has proudly achieved Rookie of the Year and other franchisee awards. He’s running a very successful, high-earning business. The different franchise business models: Owner/Operator: Being an owner/operator is ideal if you are looking for an immediate career change. With this type of model, you are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the business. This is a good choice if you want to maintain total control over your investment and become immersed in the chosen business. Owner/Operators make all operating decisions, resulting in a greater time commitment overall. Startup period may result in no personal income being generated. Executive: An executive franchise is primarily business to business in nature. Depending on the business model this will mean that your role as a franchisee will see you interacting with senior business decision makers, to sign them up for your services. The franchisor will equip you with the training and tools to market and sell successfully. An executive franchise itself can cover many different industry sectors such as consultancy, coaching, financial services, legal services, recruitment, IT and more. Absentee: This business model is suited for you if you are looking solely for an investment opportunity. The time commitment is minimal as you hire out all functions to operate the unit. You would have little to no involvement in the day-to-day operation. No industry knowledge is needed, as you hire out management. Semi-Absentee: This model blends aspects of both owner/operator and executive/absentee model. It's ideal if you are looking for an additional income to diversify your current income and build equity while keeping your day job. The time commitment is low, requiring only around 10-15 hours per week, meaning you can keep your day job and the security that comes with a steady income.
