Today is the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief. While diversity is a source of strength and vitality, sadly, people and communities continue to endure acts of intolerance and violence based on religion or belief. This date was created to strongly condemn continuing violence and acts targeting individuals, including persons belonging to religious minorities, because of or in the name of religion or belief. Regardless of one’s religion or beliefs, we all deserve respect and to feel welcome and safe in our environments. We must embrace each other’s differences, strengthen interfaith dialogue and use our voices to call out acts of discrimination and hatred. #YorkRegion is committed to creating a welcoming and #inclusive environment recognizing and celebrating all dimensions of #diversity. #EndHateYR Learn more about the various faith, cultural and other significant dates marked in our diversity calendar at york.ca/inclusiveyr #InclusiveYR

Join us as we commemorate #Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, a pivotal moment in American history that embraces a commitment to equality for all. This day not only honours the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States but also serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for racial equity and social justice. While Juneteenth is rooted in American history, its principles resonate universally and are relevant to all who value democracy, citizenship, and self-determination. Here's what Juneteenth stands for: Democracy - Celebrating the fundamental right of all individuals to be free. Citizenship - Emphasizing access to basic civil liberties, including the ability to participate in the democratic process. Self-Determination - Affirming a person's ability to have agency over their own life. We invite our friends across the pond and everyone around the world to join us in recognising and celebrating Juneteenth. Let’s come together to honour the past and work towards a future where equality and justice are realities for all. #RideForFreedom #EndModernSlavery #freedomday #freedom #happyjuneteenth #futureequality #commitmenttoequality #socialjustice #stopexploitation

🛑I’m a First-Generation Adult Child of Immigrants🇩🇴 My love for America 🇺🇸 compels me to fight against Hate and intolerance in all its forms. Receiving comments of denial, skepticism, and backlash in response to my efforts makes me feel hopeless. Then I remember what my mentor used to say to me… "You might feel hopeless but you are not helpless". This Is Hate Speech 👉🏽 “Nobody has any idea where these people are coming from... It's poisoning the blood of our country." In my experience, acts of racism/Hate seek to damage or destroy another person’s feelings of self-worth. The result is to dehumanize a fellow human being. 🎯Words turn into actions. We can't ignore the link between hate speech and hate crimes. As a first-generation Dominican, your support for elected leaders, individuals, or groups with a documented history of hatred and affiliation with white nationalism and fascism places me and my family in danger. Remember👇🏾 ▪️Hate is a learned behavior. 🎯 Hate can be unlearned. If you never experienced Hate to understand that feeling uncomfortable with discussing Hate is part of the process of acknowledging it. ✔️Initiate conversation ✔️Cultivate a new way of thinking ✔️Take action 🗣️ I’ll continue to use my platform to lift the voices of those who do not have a platform. Join me and speak out against Hate, Fascism and Vote🗳️ #Immigration #firstgen #latinos #hispanic #hate #racism #democracy #quote #dominican #vote #immigrants #immigrantstory

Juneteenth represents the significant milestone of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. This happened well after the Emancipation Proclamation (2 1/2 years later). The delay shows the injustice the African Americans faced that is still very much prevalent today. Today and every day, let's continue to celebrate the strength of the African American community. There is still so much work to be done for the ongoing fight for civil rights and social equity. How you can take action: 1. Advocate for policy change- we must continue to lobby for policies that address racial disparities. 2. Educate and Support- we can educate ourselves and others about the history and the ongoing racial discriminations. We can show support by validating experiences and help individuals and families heal. Together we can celebrate progress and continuing the fight!!! #socialwork #Juneteenth #racialjustice

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. This day reflects the date on which word of emancipation reached the last enslaved individuals in Texas: June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Communication isn't always swift. Today, JSR is off and celebrating the work of our partners (who are all improving social determinants of health) as they share truth, fight for what is right, and improve our world. #Juneteenth #PowerOfCommunication #TruthAndJustice"

Juneteenth has become the most well-known celebration for the ending of slavery in the United States. In fact, it is viewed by some as America’s second Independence Day. The history of this important celebration is complex and often misunderstood. #Juneteenth isn’t a straightforward story of emancipation, nor did it necessarily improve conditions in short order, or across the country. Freedom was not a straight line from the Emancipation Proclamation to Juneteenth to the Civil Rights movement. In fact, there's around 100 yrs between the Revolutionary War, Juneteenth, and MLK. Individuals had to fight for every piece of freedom they experienced and the struggle for justice that started long before the war did not end with emancipation. Today, we celebrate #freedom, #perseverance, and the value of people. May we each recogize where injustice exists and champion the oppressed.
