The work of medical laboratory technicians is often undervalued, yet it is through precise diagnostics that the appropriate treatment can be determined, increasing the chances of recovery and, at times, saving lives. In my experience, there have been instances of detecting hidden markers of certain diseases, and promptly notifying medical personnel has enabled the adoption of effective treatment approaches. The duties of medical laboratory technicians can be routine and strictly governed by work regulations; however, meticulous attention to detail and close collaboration with physicians can sometimes prevent the spread of aggressive pathogens and resistant strains of microorganisms. It is often said that the laboratory serves as the eyes of the doctor. The detection of crystals in urine, bacterial meningitis, anemia, kidney failure, or viral hepatitis relies heavily on the qualifications, precision, and diligence of the laboratory technician. The more advanced the equipment and laboratory methods, the higher the quality of service and accuracy of results, leading to improved treatment outcomes and better patient health.

Addressing the Inadequacies Common to Medical Laboratory Technicians A laboratory technician is a scientific and technical worker who assists scientists in laboratories, and this often involves work with complex systems to help record the results appropriately, and to aid in the routine procedures that take place in a laboratory. Medical Lab Technicians as they are called, are therefore responsible for receiving, testing, analyzing, recording and reporting results of the tests conducted. They play a vital role in the effective diagnosis and treatment of patients. To be a successful medical lab technician, one need to have a solid background in science and research since most of their daily tasks involve analyzing scientific evidence, which is a prerequisite for competence in the field. However, like any profession, lab technicians are susceptible to errors. These can include environmental errors, procedural mistakes—often the most common type in laboratories—human errors, as well as instrumental error. Additionally, to perform optimally, medical lab technicians must possess a specific set of skills tailored to their responsibilities. This include scientific and analytical expertise, dexterity, computer literacy, troubleshooting abilities, time management, multitasking, and strong communication skills. Attention to detail is particularly critical, as even small oversights can lead to incorrect lab results, which can have serious consequences for patients. What you need to know about Medical Laboratory Scientists 🔬 💉 While I was at the lab one day, a client returned to collect her test results from the previous day. After printing out the validated results, I handed them over to her. With a hesitant expression, she asked me, ''Can you explain the results to me, or is that not possible?'' That was a legitimate question, but I wondered internally how someone performing a laboratory investigation wouldn't understand the results. Nonetheless, I smiled and assured her, 'Yes, of course, I can explain the results to you. This scenario is not unique to just one individual; it is a common occurrence in my line of work. Operating as a service provider, the lab primarily serves walk-in clients and physicians. Despite being the unsung heroes of the healthcare delivery system, I strongly believe that our clients should understand who we are and the pivotal role we play. We are more than just individuals in white coats who collect blood samples for laboratory tests or provide estimated turnaround times. We are a team of highly trained medical professionals who significantly influence about 70% of clinical decisions made for patients. Within our profession, we encompass various roles, including Medical Lab Assistants (MLAs), Medical Lab Technicians (MLTs), Medical Lab Scientists (MLSs), Doctor of Medical Lab Science (MLS.Ds), and Specialist Consultants, among others The next time you step into a lab, rest assured that you are interacting with a team of extensively trained professionals. Much like pilots adhere to strict checklists and standard operating procedures to ensure safety, we (Lab Scientists), too, follow rigorous protocols to provide you with the highest quality healthcare. As a Medical Lab professional, I strongly believe in the importance of competency assessment in our field. Not only does it ensure that we are providing accurate and reliable results, but it also helps us stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in technology and techniques. Competency assessment is a continuous process that involves evaluating the skills, knowledge, and performance of medical lab technologists. It helps to identify areas for improvement and provides opportunities for professional development. There are many tools available for conducting competency assessments, including proficiency testing, checklists, and direct observation. The frequency of assessments may vary depending on the laboratory's policies and procedures, but it should be done at least semi annually for new staff and annually for existing staff. Competency assessment is crucial for maintaining the integrity and quality of laboratory results.
