Last night was very humbling. I had the opportunity to return to the place that gave me the tools to restart my life, and I will forever be grateful for that. Since it is Movember, which focuses on Mens Health, I have a story to share. I recently passed the 6yr mark of sobriety, but it felt a bit different this year. The first 5 years of sobriety, I took it very seriously and put all my effort into changing my frame of mind from very negative to positive. After receiving my 5-year medallion last year, things changed. I started taking every aspect of my life for granted because my life on paper looked great. I didn't take my sobriety and spirituality serious, my ego was telling me, "Jeff, you don't need that anymore. You got this." I was isolating myself and didn't reach out to my positive influences, which led to months of depression and recently planning my demise. Normal people would say, "You have a great life, how could you be depressed?" I suffer from depression because I'm not one of the normal people. I've suffered from depression since I was 13 years old, but fortunately, I now have the tools to recover. I share this because many men don't have the tools available. Please, if you're suffering inside, make a call and talk to someone. It may save your life. Joining this community three years ago was one of the best decisions I ever made. It all started when I followed some random IT related account on instagram and the next thing I knew, I was hopping on a plane to Philadelphia to participate in my first #TEKSGiving. Fast forward to today… 3 TEKSgivings later…. We’re prepping for our 3rd annual TEKFest to secure funding for #TEKSGiving25. If you DONT know what #TEKSgiving is, it’s our annual charity project where we select a member-nominated NFP that is in dire need of technological help, evaluate their current situation, redesign their ENTIRE IT and security infrastructure, then we use every dime we raise from donations AND #TEKFest proceeds to purchase ALL of the equipment they need…crazy right? Nope. The crazy part is our community members from all across the country… even some international members….mobilize. We fly in, 20-30 members deep, rip out all of the old stuff, and install everything over the weekend…. All for free. It honestly blows my mind every year I’ve been. The impact that some of the upgrades have on these organizations is unmeasurable. Which brings us back to #TEKFest…. Doing all of these cool things unfortunately requires money. Lucky for you, we’re not just asking for donations for nothing (although you can still do that @ www.donate.teknowledge.org). If you come to #TEKFest you’ll get access to several different educational classes, face time with some of the most incredible vendors and manufacturers in the game, and the ability to network with business owners from all over that truly believe in #CommunityOverCompetition. When starting a project, typically your plan is to make it to the finish line and leave the space better then how it started! But plans are made to be changed, right?? Getting your space back into shape means letting go of things that no longer serve you for one reason or another. At the end of every project you are left with a completed space that brings you joy + happiness and a corner filled with discarded items. Consider making one more change to your plan and separating your trash and donation. Your unwantables can go on to serve others in need, rather than in a landfill. There are so many organizations in need!
