A pragmatic product approach sometimes requires us to do absolutely useless things to satisfy the requirements of the people who pay the bills, to achieve a successful product launch/feature launch. Here's a short version of the story of how it happened the world's most successful firearm, the AR15 (and its successors):
The US Army sought to purchase about 85,000 rifles, to fill a gap until it developed their own version of whatever suited their needs (spoiler alert, that never ended up happening).
At the same time, Colt had the AR15 (the 15th model of Armalite Rifle) available, and already tested at a limited quantity of 8,500 by the US Air Force.
The army absolutely insisted the rifle should "a forward assist to help push the bolt into battery in the event that a cartridge failed to seat into the chamber". To put it plainly, they wanted a feature that they had on a bolt rifle, on a completely different design. It made the rifle more expensive, it added more complication, and it did nothing to help resolve any jams in the rifle. It was however, in retrospect, a very early version of a "fidget device", in that it was a useless button you could press on your rifle (and we all did it!). Colt added it regardless, that sealed the deal and the rest is history, the M16 replaced the M14 as the primary rifle of the US Army, and then the rest of the branches of service. It was mass-produced by other companies as well, once the patent expired, and went on to success in the US private market.
So, from 1964, to TODAY (!) all the M16/M4 variants have this forward assist.
To explain from my personal point of view - this feature pushes the bolt forward (as is its name), when in fact, the way to resolve any jam is to eject the cartridge, clear the obstruction and proceed, so you pull the bolt backwards to do this! The opposite of what a forward assist does, which in fact can only exacerbate the problem.
Finally, only around 2023, with the new version of the US battle rifle (the SIG XM7) "SIG...removed the forward assist from production versions of the XM7 to reduce the weight of an unneeded feature"
60 years for a feature that almost no one used or needed, that added cost, weight, complexity for everyone. Would it be possible to have the US Army adopt the M16 without this feature, as the Air Force initially did? We'll never know. Was it a worthwhile price for Colt to pay at the time to help make M16 the most popular 5.56x45 caliber rifle in the world? Seems so. Pragmatic, not dogmatic.
Being a product manager, or an entrepreneur, you have to get used to these things, to not having your way, in order to attain a higher goal.
