How do we recognize the superego? Let’s say you spilled milk many, many times from whenever you learned to hold a cup until you were about three or four. Maybe Mommy or Daddy or your caregiver did or did not react but let’s say that there was a day when the adult in charge got really upset. Maybe they were having a bad day and they got mad or maybe they cried. And this hit you. Hard. You upset Mommy! You may have felt small, unable to do much about the awful mistake you made. Maybe you felt less than, as if there was something terrible wrong with you. Fast forward and you are a mature adult and … you spill red wine on your boyfriend’s light-colored carpeting. (I did that.) I suddenly felt small and less than. This is the work of the superego, to cause us to feel small and less than. So you spilled red wine. Or milk. Or the gravy you were making or whatever. Recognize the superego. Are you feeling small and less than? Even a little? Now, pause. Breathe. Be fully in your body. If you are sitting, it may help to stand up. If you are standing, it may help to walk around. Because you want to remind your body-mind that you are not three. You are grown. And when you spill something, you simply clean it up. Do you need to feel bad about yourself to be motivated to clean up the spill? No? Then don’t waste time doing that. At first, you may need to retrain yourself. You may need to take a breath, maybe even let yourself smile or even give a little laugh. And then clean up the mess. As you do this, it is important to watch your self-talk. Treat yourself with respect. After all, it’s only a spill. (If it’s red wine, Folex is the best! Google it!)

R U OK? Day Today, I just want to remind you how powerful a simple check-in can be. I care so much about the people in my life, and sometimes all it takes is a gentle conversation to make someone feel less alone. If you're not sure where to start, here are 4 steps that can help: 1️ Ask, "Are you OK?" – It’s a small question, but it could open the door for someone to share how they’re truly feeling. 2️ Listen with an open heart – Just being there, listening without judgment, can make all the difference. 3️ Encourage action – Help them think about what they can do next, whether it’s talking to someone or taking a break. 4️ Check In – Let them know you’re here, not just today but always. A follow-up means so much. So I gently ask R U Ok? We’re all in this together, and your kindness could be exactly what someone needs. Sending you all love and support.
