Focus. In business, it's probably the most important skill you can have. Full vertical integration, diversification, global expansion - in too many cases, these are the outcomes of an inability or unwillingness to focus. Choosing your target consumer - choosing your delighting brand value proposition for them - choosing your specific geographic where to play. These are the hallmarks of a focused business. Adding in all the costs and complexities and required expertise and assets, to be fully integrated or diversified or globally present, especially when the market line of sight in unclear or uncertain, makes little strategic sense. You earn big(ger) - you don't buy it - you earn it by researching and testing and refining and proving out first - then, you earn the right to thoughtfully expand, knowing that your better will beat the competition's first. It's a theme far too few companies understand and even fewer have applied. And, in Canadian cannabis, the sad results are laid bare for all to see.
