Pro tip: Wanna get your wild-and-wheelin-free colleagues to thread more stuff in Slack? (Because holy sh*t does it get messy if they don't?) Well, I highly recommend assigning a random (annoying) emoji that you post every time a comment should be inside the thread of its parent comment. I'm personally partial to the good ol' goose-bonk, where a goose hits them with a stick. As you can see below, even your team will revel in joining the glee of policing the hygiene of Slack channels — and best of all, some nameless goose will do all of the corporeal punishment work for you. Good morning, and welcome back to the Red Mike. Happy Friday! I’ve been dealing with some Gremlins today—or at least I thought they were Gremlins. Anyway, these Red Mike Messages are leadership and life lessons I’ve picked up from 25 years as a public servant, 16 years as a youth football coach and scouting volunteer, and 10 years as a mediocre athlete with far more heart than physical ability. Today, I’m going to talk about a couple of things, including Duality. But first, here’s a quick rant—something about feeling like that meme of Homer’s dad yelling at clouds. Right now, I feel like the grumpy old man mad because they moved everything at the store, and I don’t know where anything is. Or, as in The Godfather, they’re “messing around with my arrangements.” So here’s what happened: I write up notes every day and put them in WordPad. It’s a simple, easy word processor—not as basic as Notepad, but still straightforward. Well, Windows, in their ultimate wisdom, decided, “You don’t need WordPad anymore.” I went to my desktop and couldn’t find it. Then I checked my taskbar, and it was gone. I thought, “What the heck?” After freaking out, I found my documents in the saved folder, but the WordPad icon was gone. Instead, everything had the Word icon. I couldn’t get it to look the way I wanted, and after fiddling with it for a bit, I realized, “Oh, it’s 6:34—I need to get started!” A heads-up would’ve been nice, Windows. Apparently, this was part of an update back in November. I delay updates because you never know what bugs will pop up, but eventually, the nagging got to me. So, here we are. That’s my old-man rant for the morning. Not as entertaining as yesterday’s, but hey, at least you can laugh at my expense. Part 2 in the comments

Here’s a Slack hack to boost your efficiency: Step 1: Read a message. Step 2: Mark it as unread so you don’t forget it. Step 3: Forget that you already read it. Step 4: Read it again. Step 5: Mark it unread again—just to be safe. Repeat indefinitely, never actually doing the task. 😅
