We are delighted to be joined by Collette Pichon Battle of Taproot Earth for our next webinar, Lessons From The Field: Environmental Impacts of Segregation! As communities across the globe fight for climate justice, we must consider that environmental racism has always been a core consequence of inequitable and discriminatory policymaking across the United States. Choices made by state, local, and federal policymakers continue to have myriad disproportionate environmental impacts on Black and brown communities. The Canadian Senate has passed Canada’s first environmental justice bill C-226 that will require the government to examine the links between racialization, socio-economic status and environmental risk to develop the country’s first national strategy on environmental racism and environmental justice. As an organization committed to anti-racist action on the disproportionate impact of the climate crisis on marginalized communities, we’re encouraged by the potential for progress from this bill. Environmental justice isn’t just an environmental issue—it’s a civil rights issue. But environmental justice issues have often been left out of the Earth Day conversation, despite the fact that divested communities disproportionately experience the impacts of climate change. This #EarthDay, we’re celebrating our partners—the Black- and brown-led organizations who are leading the fight against climate change and systemic racism in their communities.
