When I first heard about DevOps in those early years, it was defined initially as a movement... To improve the relationship between Development and Operational teams. Before DevOps code was just "thrown over the wall" and most operational work was hand cranked and artisanal in nature. This movement was something I was excited about as it solved a lot of frustrations I was seeing in the engineering environments I was a part of. While a lot of companies and institutions have not got the whole vibe around a cultural shift by implementing DevOps teams instead of centring around a philosophy, the nature of CI/CD and IaC, in my experience, has penetrated into most organisations and is a direct result of the DevOps movement. I agree with the article in the sense that the complexity of systems and organisations have changed and that DevOps principals are no longer covering everything needed. I'm excited about a new paradigm and I'm confident that a shift to a focus on the platform will bring a new era of change, much like the DevOps movement before it.

DevOps is trickier than we think. There are many technical and cultural aspects you need to get right in order to enjoy the benefits of this approach. First and foremost, build a solid platform 🛠️. A platform is a set of technologies and processes that allows your product teams to deliver, deploy, and operate software applications with ease. Automate everything 🤖. Eliminate or minimize manual intervention on infrastructure and applications. Prefer declarative manifests over imperative commands or scripts. Be frugal (KISS) 🤓. Choose your tech stack carefully. As Gregor Hohpe highlights in his "Platform Strategy" book, you need to be aware of the difference between a Sinking Platform and a Floating Platform. Use data to drive innovation. Collect feedback from infrastructure, applications, and, most importantly, your teams. Address any concern. Increased scale, new technologies, and new requirements will make your solutions obsolete unless you keep adapting and improving them. https://lnkd.in/d8_ga7fs

But the article's point about its current state is valid. We've reached a crossroads. DevOps has become ubiquitous, yet its true potential remains untapped in many organisations. Why? • Cultural Resistance: Old habits die hard. Silos still exist, and collaboration isn't always a priority. • Tooling Overload: The sheer number of DevOps tools can be overwhelming, leading to complexity and confusion. • Misaligned Incentives: Dev and Ops teams may still have conflicting goals, hindering true collaboration. But it's not all doom and gloom. DevOps can be revitalised: • Leadership Buy In: C-suite support is crucial for driving cultural change. • Focus on Outcomes: Emphasise the why of DevOps, not just the how. • Simplify Tooling: Choose tools that integrate well and streamline workflows. • Continuous Improvement: Embrace a culture of experimentation and learning. DevOps isn't dead, but it needs a reboot. Yet another article about "Bullshit" DevOps and "Shiny" Platform Engineering https://lnkd.in/ewtV9wXS TL;DR: 🔸 DevOps has deviated from its original goals, often creating new silos rather than eliminating them. 🔸Establishing dedicated "DevOps" teams can lead to bottlenecks, as they become gatekeepers for infrastructure tasks. 🔸Relying on developers for operations tasks can result in inconsistent practices and neglected best practices. 🔸Operational tasks often lack visibility and recognition, causing them to be undervalued within product development cycles. 🔸Operations should be treated as a commodity, emphasizing standardization and automation to reduce complexity. 🔸Platform engineering enables developer self-service, allowing teams to manage infrastructure needs without external dependencies. Also article author emphasizes some good practical Internal Development Platform (IDP) qualities: 🔹 Extendable. IDPs must work for all workload types, whether containerized, serverless, or virtualized. 🔹Anti-Lock-In, you should be able to walk away from a bad build-or-buy decision without risking production or having an arduous migration process. 🔹Security, compliance, and guardrails must be built in. Without them, you are not enabling self-service, you are enabling disservice. 🔹Ephemeral environments for applications and infrastructure must be supported. 🔹Configurable alerting and monitoring for provisioned infrastructure and applications with good defaults. If engineers can deploy their own resources, they must be monitored without requiring an extra tool to configure. 🔹Powerful building blocks to increase engineering velocity. 🔹Enable experimentation through flexibility and extensibility. Is DevOps in Good Health? Slowing down DevOps Activities: In spite of 83% of designers engaging in DevOps, deployment measurements appear an increment in low performers.   Sending Challenges: As it were 14% of designers can convey code in a day, and fair 9% can send different times per day.   Benefit Rebuilding Issues: Only 11% can reestablish service in under an hour, whereas 41% take more than a week depending on the complexity of the services and applications.   Device Complexity: Utilizing different CI/CD devices can prevent execution  due to interoperability challenges and expanded mental stack.
