Yesterday, as part of the “Women in Tech Leadership” programme at University Centre Leeds, we had the privilege of having our very own COO, Sarah Hague, share her incredible career journey to date, with some helpful insights into changing the status quo, breaking stereotypes and inspiring women to not just lead, but to lead with purpose. Sarah's story is an inspiring one, where she’s embraced what she calls a “squiggly career path”; committing to always learning, embracing every opportunity (plus creating opportunities where none existed) and connecting commercial objectives with technology. During her 20+ year career, she’s navigated through roles in project management, digital transformation, data analysis and change management, ultimately leading her to her current position as COO of BlackDice. Here are some key takeaways from Sarah's talk: ▶ Embrace every opportunity with a 'Say Yes to Everything' attitude ▶ Never stop learning; the journey of education is continuous ▶ Link business goals with data insights and technology to drive transformative change ▶ Exposure to diverse functions throughout a business enriches your skill set and perspective - progress isn’t always upwards, it can be sideways too ▶ Empowerment is about breaking stereotypes and leading with purpose At BlackDice, we’re deeply committed to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI), and social mobility. We believe in providing fair opportunities for all, irrespective of their background. Sarah's journey from volunteering with educational charities to empowering women on boards exemplifies our core values and mission, and we couldn't be prouder to have her in our leadership team. Thanks for having us, UC Leeds. Looking forward to continuing our collaboration and supporting the next generation of women leaders in tech! If you attended Sarah’s talk yesterday, please do share any photos or insights that you found useful in the comments below, or give Sarah and BlackDice Cyber a tag! 🌟 Exciting Times at the Women IN Tech Symposium! 🌟 I had the pleasure of attending the first Women IN Tech Symposium at Vincennes this week for Indiana Women IN Tech Week, and it was an incredible experience! The event was packed with insightful talks and fantastic opportunities to speak with like-minded individuals. Although tech spans numerous fields, one of the most surprising and delightful aspects of the conference was the diversity of the attendees. I was particularly impressed by the range of backgrounds among the women I met, including those from the automotive, naval tech, cybersecurity, and more "traditional" computer application-related industries. Engaging with these women allowed me to learn about their unique challenges and innovative solutions in their respective fields, which made the experience even more enriching. One of the key takeaways from the conference was recognizing that many women, despite their impressive backgrounds and expertise, initially felt hesitant to put themselves out there. Many mentioned their fear of failure and lack of experience as key factors in this hesitation. In fact, research indicated that women were more likely to avoid failure than men, which can get in the way of career goals, as cited by Tara Mohr in an article from Harvard Business Review. Reflecting on her experiences, one panelist, Karen Diggs, co-founder of the Indiana CTO Council, shared, “Failure is the first attempt in learning.” Another panelist, Caitlyn Stoltz, an information system security manager, joked that it was good to learn from your own mistakes and fail, but not in front of your boss. Their courage to step forward and share their experiences was truly inspiring and highlighted the importance of fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for everyone. Reflecting on my own journey in the tech industry, even though I am still relatively new, I can relate to the initial hesitation and fear of failure that many women expressed. Previously, I often felt the same way, especially when tackling complex projects/problems or stepping into leadership roles. However, I’ve learned that embracing these challenges and viewing failures as learning opportunities has been crucial for my growth. The insights shared at the symposium have reinforced my belief in the power of resilience and the importance of supporting one another in our professional journeys, regardless of gender. #WomenInTechWeek #WomenINTech #Vincennes

“Ladies, trailblazers, fellow visionaries, and indomitable women of the IT realm … I am the least likely IT leader. I scored low in math, I don’t have a computer science degree, I have degrees in public relations, advertising, business, nonprofit management and program management. I can’t code well. I don’t dream in Java or Python, yet I have been in IT and innovative technologies longer than most people have had an email. I currently lead the IT strategy at one of the nation’s foremost discovery engines focused on national security. How did that happen? … because I have always known that innovation and technology centered around one thing: people.” To hear more about IT leadership and how women are making our mark in technology, watch my keynote speech from the recent @Dell Technologies Forum in Washington, D.C., on demand: https://lnkd.in/e73kCTsd #WomenInTech #WomenInIT #DellTechForum But most importantly, add your voice! How do you make your mark in the world? What are your recommendations and values for others?

#internationalwomensday #microsoftpartners Women make up 49% of employment in non-STEM occupations, but just 29% in tech roles. For leadership positions such as VP and C-suite, representation drops to 17.8% and 12.4%. Microsoft believe that if we are not unleashing the full potential of female tech talent, then our businesses are missing out. We want to change these statistics, which is why we’re shining a spotlight on talented tech professionals from across Europe. Nominations now open for our Power Women Programme & Award - Open to all Tech Leaders from across the Microsoft EMEA Partner Ecosystem!

When struggling to secure top talent in the tech space, it's important to reflect on how you are evaluating talent, where you are looking and who you might be overlooking in the process. Research shows that while education is still an important qualification, increased emphasis on a candidate's #skills is growing in order to widen the talent pipeline and shorten the skills gap. Identifying hires based on skills also has the potential to diversify tech workforces as well, particularly to increase representation of women in the field. As a Prosum Alumni, we closely follow Randi Levin, a renowned CIO and advocate for advancing women in tech who frequently shares a wealth of strategic insight into how to facilitate change as individuals and organizations.
