UW - Investors in Purple - Part 3 by Ian Richard Lawton ♥️ After 17 years working as a Prison Officer I got the job as a Utility Warehouse Energy Customer Services Advisor - Huzzah! Training was thorough but also quite fun. 8 weeks of learning how to use the systems, how billing worked, all the various plans, processes and procedures eventually culminating with us playing one final Kahoot before fledging the nest, joining our new teams and actually taking calls. My illness was/is still an issue but adjustments were made with further accommodations available and on the table if ever i need them. I began to feel a bit safe, secure. Loz was a few weeks ahead of me job wise and, in less than 3 months, being typically her, had already gone for and gotten a promotion up into another department. I was a little more sedate, I waited an extra 2 months before spreading my wings! Basically, and to clarify, from the basic foundation, the bottom rung of the ladder there are so many chances, options and opportunities available in UW, so many ways that you can advance your career and experience. There’s a multitude of different roles and challenges constantly evolving for you to take on with all the support you could possibly need to achieve it. If you have an idea, share it. If you do well, you get rewarded, do more, do less, you have free reign, freedom of speech, choice! Staff wellbeing is constantly championed and further explored, team building and department interaction activities occur regularly to help boost morale and company camaraderie. I’ve found UW really is a place where you can settle, find your niche or reach even higher if you want to. It’s such a diverse and welcoming place to work, a place where you feel secure, valued, a place that gives back what YOU put in. Power to the Purple. So. Nick Skelly spoke today about this being his 11th(!!!) year at QED Legal LLP. And I thought I'd use that as a springboard to express what I feel this place is and can be. Toby Williamson made a conscious choice 12 years ago. Choice 1: Build an agency with the same old, tired commission structure. Where even your best consultants could only hope to take about £60k home in a great year. Pack it with as many consultants as he could and take it from there. Choice 2: Build an agency that rewards proper success. Where billing target lets you earn well beyond the national average and billing huge can take you past six figures in earnings. Hire strategically. Train well. Change lives. And he chose the latter. And it changed my life. And I think Nick would testify that it's done the same for him. And now, we get to carry that forward. And help the next generation of QED consultants change their lives in a hundred different ways. Some have already started to do that. It's incredibly exciting to watch happen. Because if you apply dedication, effort and focus you just can't fail here. While the idea of traveling sounds nice, nothing beats a comfy night at home. • 📚 Jessica’s favorite authors are Jodi Picoult and Liane Moriarty. • 🔎 If she could have any other job for the day, she’d be a Forensic Investigator (based on the amount of SVU she’s seen, we think she’s highly qualified) • 🚫 The most important thing Jessica has learned in the last 5 years is that “No is a complete sentence; it doesn’t require justification or explanation. Having boundaries and being true to yourself is where real happiness is and where you find your people.” Finally, when we asked Jessica what her favorite part about working for TSD was, she said it was the people, and getting to work with a team that values what each person brings to the table, while providing her the flexibility to show up as the best version of herself at work and at home. 6 years ago I met with Rory Laughton-Scott and Will Stogdale to discuss our business plans for the year. My plan was to hire an administrator. Will’s plan was to offer enhanced tech services. Standing out from the crowd. 20+ years ago when I was in the "big firm" world, part of my responsibilities included being the Sales Manager for a good sized office of financial advisors (the job title was and remains terrible but that was one of many decisions not up to me). To try and encourage the financial advisors to think about demonstrating their uniqueness, I sent an email around the office. Attached to that email was a photo similar to this one. The body of my email said something like, "This is an outstanding example of a businessperson communicating in a memorable and funny way. Hard to forget seeing this van drive by. Try to think how you can set yourselves apart from the crowd!" Holy "Hornet Nest" Batman! A few hours after I hit send, the Head of the Office (marginally better title), walked into my office and read my the riot act. "I can't believe you did that...do you know how many calls I've gotten from offended financial advisors...we are professionals...you are going to apologize immediately!" While I wanted to quote the movie Stripes with a response of "Easy Francis...", I liked my job. Even though I believed in my message, it was clearly a discretion over valor situation. I apologized to my boss and then sent an email apologizing to the office. Now in year 9 of being an independent financial advisor, we do not have a "Head of the Office" to tell us "NO!". With the lunatics running the asylum, one might think it’s easy to plow ahead being ourselves. That is not always true. It is definitely "easier", but naysayers abound. Not everyone is comfortable with the communication style here at Fairhaven Wealth Management. You have to believe down to your bones in what you do and how you do it. And boy does every member of our team. With the statute of limitations on apology retractions looming, today I officially retract both my verbal and written apologies. I believed in my "Plumber Email" then and I believe in it today. Dare to be different. While not always easy, it can be powerful and it is definitely WAY more fun! #differentiate #beyourself #plumbersrule

Sitting on #surveillance, #reflecting on my many years of #PrivateInvestigation, my #experiences, my #colleagues, and the amazing #firm that we've collectively built and continue to build. As I sit, I think about what it was like coming up in a predominantly male industry run by predominantly white ex-cops (that were very good at the job but far from helpful, understanding or sympathetic to their #employees, or for that matter, often their #clients). I think about how far my #industry has come, how far it still has to go, and how much I've changed the reality of #investigations by simply #listening, #caring, #including and purposefully #choosing to #think different and be #different. I also take #pride in the #diversity and genuine #inclusion of anyone that truly loves what we do, in my firm. I'm not sitting here because I planned to, or because I had time to kill; quite the opposite! I'm here because we've grown considerably and although I'm hiring (Hint! Hint!), I insist on #vetting, #training and #collaborating with my #staff and #contractors, and everyone available is currently assigned. It's the #BestProblemToHave. So tonight, I'm working with a colleague. Just two #Senior #PIs (that are supposed to be #competition) setting aside their respective schedules (and typical remuneration!) to ensure that a #client gets the very best #results that either firm could offer, at the #price #quoted and the #timeline #promised. Because contrary to what we were both taught, and many agencies still believe today, "competition is a way to bring some fun into the job, and should NEVER reduce your ability to provide the best #service".
