This is really intriguing. I've posted before that I think Reebok has a lot of upside; they are an authentic brand with a variety of coveted products that transcend generations. Shaq and AI's appointments open up some real possibility here. But success will take focus. Here are some of my thoughts on what they'll need to do: - Start with the consumer (always!) - Define their vault footwear icons and fiercely protect them - Chart a multi-year path for new performance product - Invest in innovation, both technical and sportstyle - Discipline, discipline, discipline: avoid overallocation and overdistribution - Segment and differentiate the marketplace - Cultivate relevant partnerships There will be pressure to act quickly but a slow, considered path is not a bad thing if it creates steady, sustainable growth. It was only a few weeks ago that adidas revealed they had a better-than-expected Q1, boasting a higher estimated full-year-guidance for the rest of 2024. Team Trefoil have now posted their full results for the first quarter, and they’re on the up. There's been plenty of highs, and while there are some lows too, they didn’t seem to bother the team at Herzogenaurach. For Q1, 2024 adidas boasted an eight percent increase in currency-neutral revenues alongside a 20 percent increase for their DTC business. Bjørn Gulden, adidas CEO, stated: ‘Sales, gross margin, and operating profit were all better than initially planned. Don't call it a comeback - been here for years. When Johannes Leonardo & Adidas approached us with an exciting project to highlight three of their iconic shoes ahead of Fashion Week 2023, we recognised the opportunity to create something truly special. Our task was clear—find iconic archive footage that grounds the film in history and showcases the global influence of Adidas shoes within a wide variety of subcultures. We embarked on a journey through an array of archive sources, spanning decades. From vintage shots of 60s athletes sporting the initial shoe designs to candid conversations with Run DMC about their cherished Adidas kicks, we explored textured glimpses of 80s Japan, 90s New York skate culture, and the evolving role of these shoes in fashion culture.
 The outcome? Three captivating films that exude authenticity and genuine engagement.
 This case study highlights the benefits of using archive content and how seamlessly blending it with live action enhances authenticity. The workflow was a streamlined collaboration between Director, Agency and The Director Studio. Finally, our clearance team diligently handled the complexities of the content clearance, ensuring the material's commercial usability. You'd be forgiven for thinking adidas' announcement in the last few hours of its rethink and withdrawal of the #football shirts for the German national team bearing the number “44” in a font that looks much like the Nazi SS lettering was just a poorly conceived April Fool’s Day prank. Much like other #branding mistakes, it shows that #marketing campaign processes from this global sportswear leader lack the rigor to prevent brand damage and lost trust, not least from its target shoppers. This is the company’s second misstep in 18 months, still marred by its divorce from Kanye West and subsequent removal of the shoe ranges following his contentious antisemitic remarks. It seems the bigger the company, the more likely such basic marketing mistakes occur from the disconnected, complex silos across their international footprints and leaderships not sharing best (and worst) practices.
