Trisuits are the new armour! ⬇️ Sitting around race events, it is only a short time before we start noticing different people and what they are wearing. One really obvious thing is how different race suits make people feel and act differently. In many ways, the suit is people’s first and last sense of identity. The fit and the level of comfort, the colours, and how it looks all impact an athlete’s level of self-consciousness. There is a reason why Wimbledon allowed non-white clothing for women, in part because of how they felt and the distraction from the performance they endured. What you wear can have an impact on how you feel. If you are self-conscious about racing, your suit choice can help you feel better and mask that self-consciousness. Sometimes, team suits can help you feel part of a community. You are more likely to get people cheering you on if they recognise your kit – that can be helpful. However, at the same time, some kit choices may mean an expectation is placed on the kit you are wearing. Wearing your nation’s tri suit is an honour, but it brings performance expectations that may be distracting. Why are we saying all this? First, identity and feeling part of something bigger than yourself are powerful but simultaneously mean you are recognised. Make sure what you race in is comfortable both physically and mentally. When you realise that the trisuit is just the armour people wear, you acknowledge that all triathletes are just people, no matter what is says on the outside of their kit.
