The European Commission has granted approval for CMA CGM's acquisition of Bolloré Logistics, a move aimed at strengthening its logistics business. However, concerns arose during the investigation regarding reduced competition in specific regions, prompting CMA CGM to propose remedies before finalizing the acquisition. The Commission found potential for unfair competition in sea freight forwarding services in certain territories, where the merger could create vertical links favoring Bolloré Logistics. To address these concerns, CMA CGM agreed to divest Bolloré Logistics' activities in certain regions and related assets in France, effectively eliminating the vertical links and competition issues. Following market tests and positive feedback, the Commission concluded that with these commitments, the acquisition would no longer pose significant competition concerns. See the article below for further details...

There seems to be a feeding frenzy - on the back of the Schenker bidding bonanza, recent analysis by Drewry highlights the ongoing vigor in merger and acquisition (M&A) activity within the port and terminal sector, spotlighting three potential deals of industry significance. Notable transactions include Hapag-Lloyd's acquisition of SM SAAM's terminal business and CMA CGM's purchase of Bollore Logistics, signaling a continued appetite for transformative deals. In this article, Drewry's Senior Analyst for Ports and Terminals, Eirik Hooper, indicates industry murmurs surrounding three potential M&A deals, notably PSA International's purported discussions to acquire Brazil's Wilson Sons, presenting strategic opportunities in the Brazilian ports market. Another prospective deal involves the sale of a 49% stake in Malaysia's MMC Port Holdings, with infrastructure investor GIP reportedly seeking financing for a deal valuing the business at $6.4 billion. Additionally, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between APM Terminals and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) for a container terminal at Vadhavan Port, aimed at accommodating ultra-large container vessels, underscores growing investment prospects in the region. These developments, assessed by Hooper, signify strategic alignments and opportunities for growth and market expansion within the port and terminal sector.

Logistics firms are increasingly finding themselves caught between a rock and a hard place. On the hard side, operational costs are impacted by soaring fuel prices, climbing wages, and growing admin and compliance burdens. On the rock side, challenging macroeconomic conditions reduce demand, yet customer expectations for superior service remain high. These pressures only thin margins even further, and with rising borrowing costs, many firms face an unfortunate collapse. In this climate, the approach of simply working harder is not enough; working smarter becomes the only viable way forward.
