Today, on International Women’s Day, the ICLA International Commercial Law Alliance is proud to announce the launch of an important initiative aimed at understanding and addressing gender diversity challenges within the legal profession. The initiative, known as the ICLA Women - Special Interest Group (SIG), is spearheaded by members, iLaw from the UK and TIGGES in Germany, under the leadership of Jenny Lau and Bahar Beyaz respectively.
Through the ICLA Women’s SIG, it is hoped that the initiative will cultivate an active community of female lawyers across the ICLA network, promoting dialogue, mentorship, and professional development. By establishing an informal yet confidential platform, the project invites female professionals from each member firm to share insights, concerns, and aspirations.
The initiative will also feature a series of events and seminars, both online and in-person, designed to engage clients, junior associates, and senior professionals. Among the pressing topics for discussion is the exploration of gender fairness and the aspirations of junior lawyers and legal trainees. This reflects a deep commitment to understanding and addressing the root causes of gender disparity in senior legal roles, moving beyond superficial solutions towards meaningful, systemic change.
Jenny Lau of iLaw and Bahar Beyaz of TIGGES have invited all members of the ICLA community to join this vital conversation. “Our goal is to not only understand the challenges but to come up with solutions that make senior legal roles more attractive and accessible to women,” says Lau. “This goes beyond quotas; it’s about creating an environment where female lawyers can thrive and lead.”
The Executive Committee of ICLA, along with the full support of current ICLA president, Dr. Dominik Wagner, LL.M. (TIGGES), has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender diversity and empowering women within the legal profession.
Through the ICLA Women SIG, the alliance aspires to create a more inclusive and equitable future for all members of the legal community.

In a significant shift towards gender equity in the legal profession, a recent survey has highlighted that 13 of Australia's largest law firms now boast partnerships with over 40% female representation. This marks a considerable increase from five years prior, where only one firm met this criterion.
The Australian Financial Review Law Partnership Survey, backed by the UNSW Faculty of Law & Justice, indicates that nearly half of the new partner appointments are women, bringing the total percentage of female partners in the top 50 firms to 35.2%.
This progression reflects a broader trend over the last seven years, with a 10% rise in female partners. However, this advancement at the partnership level stands in stark contrast to the gender distribution among graduates and senior associates, where women exceed 60%.
The 40% target for female representation is advocated by groups like Chief Executive Women, as it provides a concrete benchmark while maintaining recruitment flexibility.

The latest part of Law.com International's 2024 Diversity Survey is out today, examining gender breakdowns at law firms across the city.
The data reveals fairly middling figures at partnership level- with many firms seemingly unable to improve on what are already fairly average stats.
Meanwhile, at the more junior level, the numbers paint a different picture, with many firms boasting a greater number of women associates than male. But can the industry retain this female talent all the way to partnership?

The Power of Belonging: A Key Solution for Women and other Diverse Individuals in Law
The legal profession continues to grapple with the persistent issue of women and diverse lawyers leaving the field. Despite efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, the numbers remain concerning. To address this challenge, we must consider the significance of belonging—an aspect that can profoundly impact the retention of women and diverse lawyers.
Progress is being made by firms implementing polices that highlight the importance of diversity, equity & inclusion, but it is our sense of belonging that empowers us to feel the connection to our colleagues and workplace that leads to higher engagement, job satisfaction and increases retention.
As a lawyer and empowerment advocate I believe that belonging starts from within. By learning skills and strategies to strengthen our self-worth & conviction that we are enough, we can create a solid foundation for fostering connections with others.
When we feel confident in ourselves and our abilities, we are more likely to engage with our colleagues and the legal community. By investing in our personal growth and well-being, we can cultivate an environment where women and diverse individuals not only thrive but also feel a deep sense of connection and belonging in the legal profession. This sense of belonging empowers us to contribute our unique perspectives, drive innovation, and build a more equitable and inclusive legal landscape for future generations. 🔥
