A seafarer talking about seafarers.
On this year's Day of the Seafarer, our colleague Capt Yves Vandenborn FNI, Head of Loss Prevention, Asia Pacific shared his views in SAFETY4SEA's industry voices: From shore to ship: Industry voices for the Day of the Seafarer, "Enhancing our efforts in showcasing the positive aspects of a seafarer’s career goes a long way in appealing to the younger generation as well as communicating our sentiment to current seafarers and this is helpful in recruiting and retaining crew." As we celebrate the “Day of the Seafarer” today, we would like to stress the crucial role of our colleagues at sea and their contribution to our day-to-day lives. Without our seafarers, global trade as we know it would simply not be possible. Every day, they give their all to keep our supply chains intact and thereby ensure that many essential products make their way to our markets, homes and tables – safely and on time. This year’s theme is all about “Safety at Sea” – an issue of utmost importance to us, as we embrace our responsibility to guarantee fair and safe working conditions for our seafarers. This is also included in our recent report on the implementation of the German Supply Chain Act, which provides details about how we systematically identify risks in addition to outlining the preventive measures we’ve put in place to safeguard human rights. I would like to send out a big “Thank you!” to all the fantastic seafarers across the world. Please join me in saluting them for their excellent and essential work as well as in continuing to do our best to ensure a safe working environment for them at sea! #HapagLloyd #DayofTheSeafarer #ThankYouSeafarers #SafetyTipsAtSea #Sustainability #ShippingIndustry #GlobalTrade

🌊 Bridging the Gap on Day of the Seafarer 🌊 On Day of the Seafarer 2024, the shipping industry expressed gratitude to seafarers, but the voices of frustration from the crew highlighted the divide between words and action. Seafarers are calling for real change in working conditions, pay, and safety rather than annual praises. Issues like seafarer abandonment, criminalization, and increased workloads remain persistent. It's time for the industry to move beyond lip service and address these critical concerns. #DayOfTheSeafarer #MaritimeIndustry #SeafarerRights #Shipping #SeafarerSafety Read more in the full article (https://lnkd.in/dgQKKJRn)

⚓️The latest Seafarer Happiness Index by The Mission to Seafarers shows a marginal improvement - but when it comes to crew welfare, this belies an increasingly apparent, two-tier reality. As Marcus Hand writes for Seatrade Maritime, a disparity in results was seen between #seafarers serving on tankers and those on board dry bulk and container ships when it comes to preparedness for new fuels. Those on tankers felt well prepared and qualified, while their fellow seafarers on dry bulk and container ships felt left out of crucial developments around new fuels. And, the revolution in communications is leading to a divide between the have and have nots when it comes to #connectivity at sea. For seafarers with up-to-date communications technology onboard the vessel the report noted many seafarers “expressed profound gratitude”. By contrast many others still have little or no connectivity, with limits on data, slow connections, or simply no access at all. 👉 The full story can be found on Seatrade Maritime News, along with all the latest headlines and insights from across the #crewing sector. https://lnkd.in/eQt2X6Nx
