Customer teams work many different funnels. Each funnel represents customers moving through stages toward a desired outcome. For example... in an onboarding funnel customers progress through each milestone until they achieve first-time value. Other customer funnels include adoption, advocacy, renewal, upsell and cross-sell. You should design and monitor each of these funnels, and track your conversion rates. Optimizing these funnel conversions will ensure more of your customers reach the goal, and help your team better flex to what your company needs from you.

How we improved our customer retention by over 5 percent, using "Merlin's Beard" as our inspiration. In 2022, we recognized the importance of enhancing the onboarding experience for our end users. The solution could not be solved in one attempt or change, it would be brick upon brick, small change after small change. Hence the name “Merlin’s Beard”, to illustrate that this would be a long term strategy and project.  Our VP of Marketing devised a strategy that would render the onboarding process more seamless, fluid, and simpler. We developed metrics, outlined the objectives, and set criteria, key characteristics, and KPIs to guide our efforts. This onboarding customer journey involved many rounds of testing, numerous variations, and the development of multiple versions. This was accompanied by several failed attempts, that at the time, we were certain would move the needle, based on our research and hypothesis. At times, it felt extremely exasperating to put so much effort and thought into an idea, test it, and then not have it work. We keep testing, testing, and testing more. Our perseverance, now over 12 months later, is now starting to pay off and get results. Our newest onboarding wizard boosted customer retention by over 5% in the first 30 days. I have heard so many times that Customer Success is a must for subscription businesses but not much is said about having Customer Success for all Business models. I don't think that Customer Success should be limited to SaaS and Subscription model businesses only - it is for every business that values long-term growth and customer relationships.
