Keep it simple—that’s what they say. But what if they’re wrong? We conducted research with over 1,200 Australian donors to understand how best to share overhead cost information. The results were surprising: donors prefer detailed cost breakdowns over highly summarised ones. One standout example is from the RSPCA Queensland 2023 Impact Report, which excels in: 🎨 Colorful Visuals: They use color to differentiate various cost categories, making the report visually appealing. 🗣 Positive Language: They avoid the term "administration" and instead use terms like "governance" and "effectiveness." 🐶 Relatable Imagery: They include engaging images of animals and stories that tie back to the financial data, showing donors exactly how their contributions make a difference. The approach RSPCA is taking is backed up by our research which shows that: 📊 Donors appreciate transparency and a clear explanation of how funds are allocated and the impacts they make. 🖼 Including images and stories that link financial data directly to the outcomes of the cause helps donors feel more connected and informed. By presenting their own investments in this way, RSPCA QLD provides donors with the transparency and detail they crave, aligning perfectly with our research findings. Do you have any examples like this? We’re always on the lookout for great examples that reflect our research findings and can help us all do better in communicating overhead costs.

A friendly reminder to accompany this #ElevateTuesdayTip - we have published on this topic before. Funders are more likely to give general operating funding now, and you can read more about how we compiled the data to draw that conclusion. https://ow.ly/65P550SACOO

The guide will take you through the various types of review and acceleration strategies you can pick, while also providing top tips and potential pitfalls - such as ill-defined questions or unrealistic expectations - and indeed some of the inherent limitations within the REA process as a whole. Our Open and Trusting Progress Report for 2023/24 is out now ➡️https://lnkd.in/ebVX32kY Open and Trusting is a framework by Institute For Voluntary Action Research that supports funders to be more flexible and responsive to applicants' needs. Since 2021, we have improved the way we make grants by using the eight #OpenAndTrusting principles. This is the third report tracking our progress. It builds on our current commitments to our applicants and grant holders and responds to the feedback we received through our most recent applicant and grant holder survey. In 2023/24, we responded to this feedback by: 👉Working hard to ensure closing dates align more to applicants' needs 👉Providing more advice and guidance for lengthy application forms 👉Sharing good funding practice with other partners Read our 2023/24 Open and Trusting Report for all our learning, reflections and actions: https://lnkd.in/ebVX32kY

Insights from the Annual Report💡 “In 2024, CEG launched a new initiative: the Democracy Reform Primers. With the goal of producing a more informed discussion about the viability of different institutional reforms, this series explains what existing research says about the impact, pitfalls, and unknowns for each reform policy. For each primer, a scholar with subject expertise writes a concise explanation of what the research does and doesn’t say about the potential of the reform. The primers serve as an accessible way for public servants, nonprofit leaders, funders, and journalists to assess institutional reform policies through an evidence-based lens. By empowering practitioners to draw upon the best empirical and theoretical research on potential reforms, the series strengthens the discourse and advocacy around what policies best serve to advance effective government. The Democracy Reform Primers mark an ongoing investment by CEG, with new primers being commissioned every year, progressively building up the series to encompass a wide range of reforms at both the national and local levels.” Want to read more? It's been a long process but we got there. 🎉 Here you can find the Strategic Framework that will inform our grantmaking, capacity building and research initiatives and activities in 2024-2028: https://lnkd.in/em6YrhmP. This document was the result of a long process including a review of the work funded so far, scoping the field and capturing the evolution of the European society in these years. We would like to thank all the partner foundations, grantees, and experts that contributed to this. In the document you will find the guiding principles and objectives of our three sub funds: 📢 Civic Power: strengthening civil society with a focus on security and sustainability 📱 Tech and democracy: addressing the impact of technology on public discourse and democratic practices 📰 Media: supporting independent public interest media in countries where civic space and freedom of the press are endangered The challenge of defending and strengthening democracy requires a level of ambition and broad thinking that we have tried to capture in these pages. While at the moment we do not accept unsolicited proposals we will soon launch some targeted open calls and ways of introducing your work to us if we have not been in touch yet.
