Taking a look at the traffic cameras around Chicago, we see varying conditions along the roads at this hour, more wet roadways to the south and more accumulating on the roadways to the north. For most, this will taper off by midday Sunday with a snow swath of 5-10+" stretching from eastern Nebraska to Michigan, much of that sticking to paved surfaces in many areas. As I drive along the outskirts of Lufkin, Texas, the rhythmic hum of log trucks echoes through the air. The highway stretches ahead, lined with towering pines like guardians of the timber-rich land. It's a daily symphony of wheels turning and engines humming, a reminder that the timber industry is the heartbeat of deep East Texas. I watch as massive trucks loaded with logs make their way up and down the highway, each carrying the lifeblood of this region. The realization strikes me: the timber industry is not just about trees; it's an economic machine supporting countless families in our community. The enormity of this industry often goes unnoticed. We take for granted the sturdy homes built from the very timber rolling by on those trucks. The paper we write on and the furniture we sit on—are all connected to the silent work of the timber industry. As I drive, I think about the hundreds of families relying on the industry's steady pulse for their livelihoods. It's not just loggers and truck drivers; it's a network of people working together to sustain our community. In these quiet outskirts, the trees tell a story of resilience, hard work, and the ties that bind us all. So, as the log trucks continue their journey, I find a newfound appreciation for the hum of their engines. Generally speaking, snow accumulations from North Dakota through northern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan will be light with most locations seeing less than .5" on non-paved surfaces and very little, if any, snow accumulation on paved surfaces, making this primarily a deicing event for many. At the start of the 19th century, there was no Texas as we know it today. Rather, west of Louisiana—the French colony-turned-state at the conclusion of the War of 1812—was a dry and rugged patchwork of native American and Mexican-held lands. After two rounds of war with Mexico and a period of independence, Texas became a U.S. state in 1845. This was fortuitous timing, for 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝, 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 1836, and was poised to help develop the wild countryside. In 1875, the United States’ first commercial wood-treatment facility was constructed by the Louisville & Nashville Railroad company in West Pascagoula, Mississippi, to creosote-treat timbers that had been attacked by a shipworm that destroys underwater pilings called teredo. But when the L&N bought the New Orleans, Mobile & Texas Railroad in 1881, it pivoted to pressure-treating crossties due to rising demand for wooden crossties that could last in all types of environments, including the extremely hot and arid land of Texas. No wonder the 1880s marked the end of the cowboy lifestyle—by then cowboys no longer needed to “drive” their 2,000+ head of cattle across uncharted territories.
