Today’s #RefugeeWeek activity saw our North East team attending a variety of events hosted by local refugee support services Walking With in North Tyneside held a ‘Happy to Chat’ drop-in session which allowed attendees to gather information about local support available to refugees, such as our Refugee Employability Programme, housing support, and more. Later in the day, members of the team accompanied Service Users to an all-women ‘Voices of Home’ event in St Mary’s Heritage Centre which was centred around women and their experiences as refugees. The event had a range of insightful speakers, live music and poetry, and a networking session where attendees could seek advice and guidance. The team also went on a tour of the Baltic Gallery of Sanctuary and the surrounding quayside. In London, our supply chain partners Catch22 set up a stall at a World Refugee Day event at Highway Vineyard Church in Newham, to speak with attendees about the support on offer through the Refugee Employability Programme - such as support with English language skills, finding a job, securing housing, and more. This week is #RefugeeWeek and the theme is ‘Our Home’. Home can be more than one place and finding it can be a journey, especially for young asylum seekers who have to leave their countries and rebuild their lives. This week is a crucial time for raising awareness about the perilous journeys young refugees, young asylum seekers and migrants undertake in search of safety and a new home. The trauma of witnessing violence, losing loved ones, and enduring dangerous travel conditions can have profound psychological impacts on young people. Upon arrival in a new country, they often encounter language barriers, and the uncertainty of their legal status. Adapting to a new education system and finding social support can be daunting, making it essential to provide compassionate and comprehensive assistance to help them rebuild their lives. At Horizon, we specialise in supporting young refugees, young asylum seekers and migrants in need to find home in a single person or community through therapeutic care, support and education. This Refugee Week we extended our warmth and hospitality beyond our own homes, schools and supported accommodation services to make our community more welcoming. Simple acts like having a chat, walking together, or sending a message of welcome can help everyone feel like they belong. Together, let’s work in solidarity to ensure young refugees, young asylum seekers and migrant in need have the right to a safe home, regardless of their background. This fundamental right ensures that all children, regardless of where they come from or their circumstances, are provided with a secure and supportive environment. A safe home is essential for their well-being, growth, and development, offering them the stability needed to heal from past traumas and build a hopeful future. How can you get involved? This week is National Refugee Week, a celebration of the strengths of refugees and a chance for everyone to broaden their understanding of how we can be supportive. Our Refugee & Migrant Settlement Services (RAMSS) team have put together 3 tips, everyday actions that you can take to support refugees set up their new lives. 1. Be understanding Refugees often come from horrible circumstances. They’ve shown incredible resilience to escape their own country and find safety and a future in Australia. Your understanding will help refugees access support relevant to their needs and aspirations. 2. Include in your community events Invite new refugees to your community events. By inviting new members of your community to your events, you’re helping people understand and find their place in their new community. For example, attending community dinners, joining walking groups and participating in other activities can help build connections and sense of belonging. 3. Be patient Many refugees arrive in Australia with limited English, be patient to help newly arrived refugees gain the confidence to learn and practice their English skills. 🌍 Imagine a world where everyone forced to flee can build a brighter future. In #Jordan 🇯🇴, 32 #refugees have turned their challenges into powerful stories of hope and resilience. Drawing on their personal journeys, they bring unique perspectives, compassion, and determination to their roles with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, uplifting their communities every step of the way. Their work with #UNHCR is not just about redefining their own futures but also about inspiring those around them. By empowering their communities and proving that dreams can thrive even in the face of adversity, they showcase the incredible impact of #resilience. 📄 For me, crafting articles that shine a light on such inspiring journeys has always been one of the most fulfilling parts of my role. Telling stories that humanize complex issues, from #displacement to #development, helps the world better understand the strength and potential of those affected. Everyone deserves to be heard. Everyone forced to flee deserves hope, dignity, and a chance to build a better future.
