I spent yesterday cruising along my old shopping turf (Chicago's Michigan Ave.), looking for examples of in-store experiences going well and those going - not so well. Two standouts 👇 :
🐴 Ralph Lauren (full disclosure - I worked at this location A LONG time ago and I'm a big fan girl) - visiting this store is an EXPERIENCE. 37,000 sq ft draped in old-world wood paneling and oriental rugs, it's akin to visiting a museum - the art is all part of Ralph's personal collection. The RL Restaurant has been a cornerstone of the upscale, see-and-be-seen crowd for a solid two decades now, and the brand recently expanded its reach towards aspirational shoppers by opening up a ground-floor Ralph's Coffee Shop (the place was PACKED on a cold, rainy Thursday afternoon). The window displays are grandiosely detailed in a calculated way that grabs attention, inviting the consumer in for more. Every inch of this store is well thought-out, visiting them is a treat.
🛍 Saks Fifth Avenue - Before I dump on another department store - Saks, I'm rooting for you! This was the place I bought my first luxury item, it holds a special place in my heart. But it was a truly awful experience. Uninspiring window displays, lackluster and unattentive sales staff, shoes strewn all over the footwear section, unbelievably messy bathrooms out of toilet paper, returns on the FOURTH floor. I was honestly shocked by how bad it was. I didn't even bother going all the way up to the top floor to check out the restaurant, it wasn't worth going up 7 flights of escalators. I will not be visiting again any time soon.

A look inside Glossier, Inc.'s newest store - will it disrupt beauty #retail a second time?
In the store, there are two rooms designed to stimulate multiple senses beyond just olfactory. One room encourages users to watch a creative film using hyper-sensorial, ASMR-like techniques — an increasingly popular tactic for #luxury brands enticing consumers back to physical retail — that highlights the different formats of Glossier You.
Another has rows of booths with mysterious red gloved hands, protruding from curtains, each of which have different personalities, such as sassy or informative, that interact with visitors before handing them a red rose.
Here's everything to know: https://lnkd.in/eRMR2cjw
We are starting to see the consequences of the appetite to acquire Macy's by ARKHOUSE Management and Brigade Capital Management, LP for the underlying value of the famed retailer's real estate. Last December, the combined investor group submitted a proposal to acquire Macy's for $5.8 billion. Macy's board declined. The group has since sweetened the bid by $1.1 billion and is now offering $6.9 billion to acquire the Macy’s stock they don’t already own for $24.80 a share. That has sent the stock up.
As a result of the initial offer, Macy's brought in real estate star power to its board (including two proposed by Arkhouse) and has devised a defensive strategy to monetize its real estate. One of the first dispositions is the 78,000-square-foot Macy's furniture gallery, which sits on a 4.6-acre site in south Miami-Dade County. It was sold to the University of Miami, according to records and real estate database Vizzda. In March, Macy’s sold its two store buildings in the Mall at Fox Run in Newington, New Hampshire for $16.25 million to Torrington Properties Inc., the Boston-based company that owns the mall and other major shopping centers in N.H.
Macy's is working with SRS Real Estate Partners to market other properties. Up for sale is one store in Alabama, one in Georgia and six in Texas. These include the Macy's store at Town East Mall in Mesquite, just east of Dallas, an enclosed mall developed in 1971 by Sears affiliate Homart Development Company, and now owned by Brookfield Properties, and Fairview Town Center in a north Dallas suburb developed in 2010 by THE MGHERRING PROPERTY GROUP LLC and now owned by Lincoln Property Company.
A sales brochure, circulated recently by Lee & Associates Commercial Real Estate Services, seeks $8 million for a Macy’s 15-acre department store property and $5 million for its 7.5 acre furniture store at Florence Mall in Florence, Ky. The mall was built in 1976 by Homart. In 2021, lenders took ownership of Florence Mall after its longtime owner, Brookfield Properties, defaulted on $90 million in CMBS debt. An ownership entity that includes Mason Asset Management, Inc. and Namdar Realty Group LLC bought the mall afterward for $38 million.
Last February, Macy's announced a plan to close about 150 underperforming stores in the next three years. About 50 locations will close on January 31, 2025, which is the end of Macy's fiscal year. As part of its initiative to focus on its best-performing stores, Macy's plans to monetize $600 million to $750 million of assets through 2026, primarily related to closures of stores and distribution centers, according to Macy's financial disclosures. The company owns almost 60% of its store locations, all held free and clear of mortgages.

In 1936, Troelstrup, a Copenhagen-based store still in operation today, faced an overstock of winter coats.
To address this surplus, the innovative store owner, Niels Christian Pedersen Troelstrup, devised a remarkable sales strategy.
He encased their entire store building, all five storeys, with scaffolding, draping it with over a thousand men's spring and winter coats.
It created a striking display.
This unconventional spectacle instantly drew the gaze of passersby, resulting in a surge of curious customers flocking to the store.
The overwhelming response led to the involvement of local authorities to manage the crowds.
Despite the police's intervention and subsequent directive to dismantle the display, the resourceful proprietor resolved their surplus inventory dilemma.
The picture, which was taken by a passing American photographer, was published in newspapers all over Europe and in America. In 1940, the picture was also published in National Geographic.
The story of Troelstrup's creative sales strategy offers several valuable insights:
1. Innovation Pays Off: Thinking outside the box and implementing unconventional ideas can lead to remarkable results. Capturing the attention of potential customers is crucial in marketing, and Troelstrup's eye-catching display demonstrates this effectively. Troelstrup's unique approach to displaying their surplus inventory not only attracted attention but also drove sales.
2. Adaptability is Essential: When faced with challenges such as excess inventory, businesses must adapt and find creative solutions. Troelstrup's ability to turn a surplus problem into a successful marketing opportunity showcases the importance of adaptability in overcoming obstacles.
3. Persistence Pays Off: Despite facing obstacles such as police intervention, Troelstrup's determination to sell their surplus inventory ultimately led to success. The story emphasises the importance of perseverance and resourcefulness in achieving goals.
Overall, the story of Troelstrup's inventive sales strategy serves as a reminder of the value of innovation, attention-grabbing marketing tactics, adaptability, community engagement, and persistence in business success.
