What can a software company do with AI, when the future is so uncertain? Where do you start? How do you keep focus? This podcast and post from my former Workmates describes a scenario we explored on our research: the “Regulation and Control” scenario, where governments begin regulating a new technology. This potential future seems to be emerging as a dominant one in the United States and Europe. I played my own role in this work, describing the four potential scenarios (check out the Datour Four Futures model for more insight) and developing research specifically to uncover which ones are the most likely and desirable to both workers and executives. Lexi Breitz, Ph.D. and her team continues this work now (Go, Lexi!). As we get closer to this Regulation and Control outcome, it’s then time to cast further out again, looking for the next emerging trends. My future of work research now focuses on labour shortages. Get ready because this is going to hit us like a freight train. I encourage all researchers looking at AI to keep pushing executives to think further out in time and resist the urge to focus on near term or even mid term research. My research was never about usability but about strategy. This is why I think UX research is a bit of a misnomer— master the techniques of strategic foresight, and your research will drive very important decisions.
