Asking someone to "earn our trust" often means we are asking them not to make any mistakes AND not to cause us to feel uncomfortable feelings. Such an important point, Simon, to always hold onto the guiding principle of lead as you would have wished to have been led. Too often leaders (bosses, teachers, friends, parents and family) fall down the slippery slope of perpetrating misguided and outdated practices simply because it was what they experienced (even though so often they hated it). So much braver to be the leader that learned what not to do and has the gumption to forge new paths inspired by what they themselves craved for in their own experience. Even better when we can step outside of ourselves and connect with those whom we lead the way they want to be led, to collaborate, be it at work, home, and play.
