This is yet another incredible example of science parelleling science fiction in an eriely accurate way. In recent years we have seen leaps in AI with the rise of generative systems convincingly pushing the boundaries of creativity and able to hold conversations full of mimicked emotion and human idioms that would likely convince Alan Turing himself. At the same time humanoid robotics has jumped into the mainstream with multiple companies poised to introduce bipedal products to the workplace. The long held furturists dream of every home having a robot to do all the chores is becoming a convincing reality in our life times. Couple this with the rise of the metaverse and virtual reality, where the example below demonstrates that the line between the digital and real worlds is blurring rapidly towards an incarnation of the Matrix. I am compelled to wonder if some of our most iconic science fictitious visions are more haunting predictions rather than abstract artworks, and if we need to sooner rather than later consider them as cautious tales about the need for appropriate safe guards, regulation and oversight.

To clarify... this is IMHO the most important paper in computer-human interaction since 6DoF XR exists. It shows how the user can get (basic, coarse) physical sensation all over the body WITHOUT using gloves, vests, etc. Instead "just" by zapping (with a medical device costing about $15k) the right areas of the brain. It's far from perfect (heavy, limited, etc) but it shows it's possible!

Vivek Kumbhari, a professor of medicine and GE doctor, and Alex Luebke, who has a background in space exploration, share their new approach of "inner space" exploration using a pillbox you can swallow to diagnose what may be happening in the human stomach (instead of a cumbersome and expensive endoscopy) including a live demo on stage. While the technology is now limited to the human stomach, it may apply to other areas and could soon replace colonoscopy. This will enable testing from home and in remote places where the patient only needs to swallow the pill, and the results are available remotely and possibly analyzed by AI. In their #CHI2024 paper (full text in the comment), Yudai Tanaka and team introduce an innovative #haptic device that provides a full-body haptic experience by stimulating the #brain directly rather than using external devices. This device, named Haptic Source-Effector, leverages transcranial magnetic stimulation (#TMS) to target specific brain regions with tiny magnetic pulses, creating sensations in various body parts without physical attachments. A custom #robotic platform moves the TMS coil across the user's head in three dimensions, enabling the stimulation of different brain areas to generate touch and force feedback in 11 body regions, including hands, arms, legs, feet, and the jaw.
