Launched at 10:52 a.m. EDT from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, this mission is a testament to human ingenuity and the spirit of collaboration. Aboard the Starliner, veteran NASA astronauts Barry ‘Butch’ Wilmore and Sunita ‘Suni’ Williams are embarking on a historic journey to the International Space Station (ISS). With a combined experience of over 11,000 flight hours, these former U.S. Navy test pilots are set to spend eight days conducting tests to certify the Starliner for operational missions. This mission marks the first time astronauts have launched atop a ULA Atlas V rocket, a milestone in commercial spaceflight. As we witness the Starliner soar into the cosmos, we’re reminded of our shared mission to make space accessible to all. 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲, and I recently came across one that exemplifies this beautifully. While many of you may have encountered this parable before, its message remains ever-relevant and impactful. During a visit to the NASA space centre in 1962, at the height of the space race between the United States and the USSR, US President John F. Kennedy noticed a janitor carrying a broom. Interrupting his tour of the facility, he approached the man and asked, "𝙃𝙞, 𝙄'𝙢 𝙅𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙆𝙚𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙙𝙮. 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙙𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜?" The janitor, without hesitation, responded, "𝙒𝙚𝙡𝙡, 𝙈𝙧. 𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩, 𝙄'𝙢 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙥𝙪𝙩 𝙖 𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙤𝙣." Isn’t this story powerful? Numerous studies have demonstrated that 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀. This anecdote underscores the profound impact of ensuring that every member of an organisation is aligned with its mission and understands the importance of their contribution towards its realisation. One of the core tasks of leaders is to translate the organisation's mission to every individual. Between work, professional development, personal development, passion projects, college, dad stuff, and life’s curveballs it’s not unusual for my wife to poke her head into my office at 5:30 pm and tell me I still haven’t told her what I want for breakfast. It's also not unusual for a naysayer or two to chime in with a back-handed compliment about how my drive is hurting myself or my family. “Give yourself a break.” “Stop trying to do so much.” “You should spend more time with your family.” But some of us are just driven, and to tell us any of the above is to tell us to stop breathing. Now, I won’t be going to space anytime soon (ever), but I do have a handful of goals across various life domains that seem lofty - borderline arrogant - when listed out, yet perfectly reasonable when taken one-at-a-time. And anytime I feel myself listening to those well-meaning voices, or giving credibility to the naysayers who raise an eyebrow at the scope of my vision alone, I look at guys like Jonny Kim and remember that, big picture, there’s a good chance I’m still aiming low. It's taken me a while to come to terms with my drive. And until I did, I had to navigate both the exhaustion that comes from the actual work and the exhaustion from the guilt and shame of doing so much work. “I love you and I know you mean well, but I’m fine and will let you know when I need a break.” “Let me worry about what I should or shouldn’t want. You worry about yourself.” If you’re driven - to the point friends and family worry about you - and you want to play your own game, get comfortable with some variation of the above statements. You’ll need them if you’re ever going to live true. And that’s the real power of Jonny Kim's story: it gives ambitious people like us permission to ignore the naysayers and try. Driving yourself harder than most people can fathom is just our nature. To listen to the voices, even the well-meaning ones, dishonors that nature. It dishonors our very existence. Only by allowing ourselves to set and pursue these absurdly wide-ranging, sky-high goals without shame or apology do we honor ourselves. Only then do we live true. Have a great trip up there, Jonny.

What a blast !!! 🚀 I had the incredible opportunity to discuss with astronaut Susan Kilrain, the profound impact of the Overview Effect. Susan is an accomplished American aerospace engineer, former United States Navy officer, and a retired NASA astronaut. She is notable for being the youngest person to pilot a Space Shuttle and one of only three women to have done so. On top of that I met with Dominic Antonelli. He served as a pilot on two Space Shuttle missions: STS-119 in 2009 and STS-132 in 2010. Hearing firsthand from someone who has seen our planet from space was truly inspiring. This cognitive shift, often experienced by astronauts when viewing Earth from space, brings a unique perspective on our planet’s beauty, fragility, and interconnectedness. Imagine, if you will, gazing upon our planet from the vast expanse of space. it is a sight to behold, a blue marble floating in the infinite void. From this vantage point, the Earth reveals its true majesty. A delicate, living organism, teeming with life, yet fragile and in need of our protection. The Overview Effect is more than just a visual experience; it’s a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility to protect and cherish our home. Recently, I visited the Kennedy Space Center for some fun and inspiration. While looking over some of the items on display from the Apollo missions, *this* caught my eye. 👨🚀 This checklist contains a set of procedures for astronauts Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins to follow in case of an emergency. Nobody could be expected to remember how to navigate a sticky situation in the most complicated vehicle humankind has ever invented, even with hundreds if not thousands of hours of training. Never mind the stress of the emergency itself! 😵💫 Similarly, how can we mere mortals expect to know exactly what to do when responding to emergencies with our production systems? If it's good enough for NASA, it's good enough for you: write emergency checklists and runbooks for the systems you support. As we prepare for next week’s launch of GOES-U, we are immensely proud to be selected by NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration to develop and build the nation’s next weather satellite constellation. The Geostationary Extended Observations (GeoXO) constellation will help the NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration gather vital information to address emerging environmental challenges in support of weather, ocean and climate operations. As an extension to the GOES-R Series, the Lockheed Martin GeoXO design will not only draw from what we’ve learned as mission integrator for GOES-R, but also on our legacy of having built more than 120 weather and environmental spacecraft for our government's civil and military agencies.
