This semester I am completing my level II clinical fieldwork rotation at the Aspirus Plover Clinic under Amanda Whipple. Amanda is an occupational therapist who specializes in low vision rehabilitation, and is certified in this specialty area. I am thrilled to have this opportunity to learn the low vision rehabilitation language and build my clinical skill set to gain experience and knowledge as a future OTR. I had the awesome opportunity to work alongside Amanda on an article regarding double vision and the impact it has on individuals, and their functional performance with daily occupations. Speech-Language Pathologist | Private Practice Consultant | Creator of the Start & Grow Your Private Practice Programs | Author | Business Coach for SLPs & OTs | Podcast Host | Speaker
In other professions, private practice is a natural track. Social work. Psychology. Dentistry. Audiology. But not speech-language pathology or occupational therapy. Very few SLP or OT grad programs talk about private practice... .... and many grumpy professors tell eager students that private practice is too much work or suggest that *they* wouldn’t be qualified to have one 🙄 Women need to know their options. And private practice is a GREAT option. Especially if you want to take control over your professional, personal and financial life. I am on a mission to help 10,000 SLPs start their practices through my signature program by 2030 and I want YOU to be a part of it. The Start Your Private Practice Program is for: ✅ SLPs and OTs who have valuable skills to offer and want to help more people ✅ SLPs and OTs who want to start a practice but are scared of making a mistake ✅ SLPs and OTs who are under-earning and are frustrated by it ✅ SLPs and OTs who are ready for a change and need more freedom and flexibility in their lives We are re-opening the doors to the Program soon and if you’re waiting for a sign to join us, this is it. Comment: START ⬇️ ... and I’ll send you the special link to sign up when it’s ready You have a Master’s degree It’s time to earn like it 🔥🔥🔥

I have completed an online course on CVA intervention using the Bobath motor learning approach. This course has changed my approach to managing stroke presentations in adult clients by incorporating sufficient opportunities for practice of real-life situations in order for neural plasticity to occur. I have a deeper understanding of the principles of neural plasticity, the process of motor learning and skill acquisition, while incorporating strategies at the person, task and environmental level. This course was designed for the MDT of occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech therapy which has enhanced my understanding of the value of each profession in the management of a client with a neurological condition. I now have a deeper respect for the importance of salience and the use of meaningful activities to achieve client-centred goals in therapy.

✔️Family involvement is a cornerstone of successful pediatric occupational therapy and behavior analysis. Engaging families in the therapeutic process not only enhances the effectiveness of interventions but also promotes sustained progress and positive outcomes for children. 🔑 benefits: 1. Personalized support: Families provide invaluable insights into the child’s daily routines, preferences, and challenges. This information helps therapists tailor interventions to meet the child’s unique needs. 2. Consistency and reinforcement: When families are involved, they can reinforce therapeutic strategies at home, ensuring that skills learned during sessions are practiced, strengthened and generalized in everyday environments. 3. Empowerment and education: Involving families in therapy empowers them with knowledge and tools to support their child’s development. Educated and confident caregivers are better equipped to handle challenges and advocate for their child’s needs. 4. Emotional support: The therapeutic journey can be challenging for both children and their families. Active involvement fosters a supportive environment where families feel valued and understood, enhancing the overall therapeutic experience. 🔗Also, interdisciplinary collaboration is crucial for maximizing the benefits of family involvement. Working together with speech-language pathologists (SLPs), physical therapists (PTs), and educators, OTs and BCBAs can create cohesive and comprehensive treatment plans that address all aspects of the child’s development. ❓ How do you involve families in your therapeutic practice? Share your experiences and strategies! Whether you’re an OT, BCBA, psychologist, SLP, or another professional, your insights on family involvement are invaluable. Let’s discuss how we can continue to support families and enhance our collaborative efforts. Article of the Month: A Sensory Integration Intervention in the School Settings to Support Performance and Participation: A Multiple-Baseline Study 🌟 This month, we are spotlighting an incredible study from the AJOT: “A Sensory Integration Intervention in the School Settings to Support Performance and Participation: A Multiple-Baseline Study.” This pioneering research by Colleen Cameron Whiting and her team is truly a game-changer for school-based occupational therapy. Here are my top three takeaways: 1. First of Its Kind: This study is groundbreaking as it is the first to specifically investigate sensory integration (SI) within a school setting using the ASI and STAR models. It’s exciting to see such innovative research paving the way for more feasible SI interventions in schools. 2. Feasible SI Program: The 15-week program they developed is a fantastic adaptation of clinic-based SI, making it suitable for schools. With twice-weekly 30-minute sessions and a 10-minute weekly consult with teachers, it provides a model for effective SI services without overwhelming school and therapist resources. 3. Encouraging Results: Although the study had a small sample size, the results were promising. The data suggested improvements in functional regulation and active participation among the participants, showcasing the potential benefits of integrating SI into school-based OT practices. For those passionate about advancing SI in schools, this article is a must-read! Dive into the full study to explore the details, or check out the OT Schoolhouse Collaborative, where I just posted a full video breakdown of this research. Have you read this article yet? Resource Share: Occupational therapists provide crucial supports for many of the needs exhibited by people diagnosed with FASD. OTs are skilled in so many areas like sensory processing, fine motor, ADLs, and executive functioning. The strategies in this article are clear, concise, and overall pretty solid. I do not believe the reward or token system in the behavioral section is a good strategy. However, I totally support positive reinforcement especially making and effort to catch children/students doing things well and pointing them out. #fasd #neurodiversity #buildonstrengths #supportsandstrategies #invinciblenotinvisible #OT #SLP #FASDinformedtherapist #i2ifasdservices https://lnkd.in/e3hJ3Y_b
