Spreading cheer and supporting our community is what the Plaza is all about. We loved meeting the winners of our Holiday shopping spree and hearing their excitement firsthand. Our winner said, ‘This is really special you guys are doing this. You just made our Christmas!’—which was the best gift we could ask for this season. Happy holidays, and stay tuned for more exciting things to come!

You've likely seen the sign countless times: “Cars Parked at Owner's Risk.” Whether it's at your favorite shopping mall, outside a restaurant, or in a commercial parking lot, this warning seems to serve a simple purpose: “If something happens to your car, don’t hold us responsible!” But have you ever considered how effective that sign actually is? Can businesses and property owners truly wave away their responsibility with a simple sign? Please, share your thoughts. #securitycorner #curiocitymademeask.

Ranking: The UK’s 10 most appealing high streets "Queen Street in Cardiff has ranked as the UK’s most appealing high street by new consumer research from American Express and GlobalData. The study, which surveyed 2,000 consumers across Britain to pinpoint what they believe makes for a great high street, was combined with in-depth analysis to identify the locations with the winning formula. Factors such as an attractive mix of retailers topped shoppers’ wish list (67%), with good parking a close second (62%). The research found that customers also value independent pubs and restaurants, with over half (52%) saying these make a high street ‘great’." by Georgia Wright at Retail Gazette American Express Dan Edelman GlobalData Plc Matt Piner #retailnews #highstreet #ukshopping

Without an urban holistic approach, high street retail will be on the brink soon. London's high-profile Regent Street also records empty units (along with some homeless people), just before XMAS.

I’ve just walked along King Street, once the most prestigious street in the city, and counted ten empty retail outlets. At the height of the Christmas season, this is shocking. We can’t just blame online shopping, many stores are thriving. The real issue affecting our high streets is their overall pull: having trains that work, great parking, affordable prices, the whole environment. To bring people back to our towns and cities, we need to create experiences that feel worth the visit. High streets are ecosystems. Retail supports hospitality, and hospitality supports retail. When one part falters, it risks pulling the other down.

This is an important part of a civil society. To achieve this means abandoning suburbia and only building at densities that can support public transport and neighbourhood facilities. Ohhh I hear the rumbling of keyboard warriors already. However before the car we built neighbourhoods around tram lines . In most of our cities these higher density neighbourhoods are now the most desireable .
IMPORTANT: This kind of small-scale retail, cafe/restaurant or service should be legal on every corner in cities/suburbs. A basic part of walkable communities. They aren’t easy financially, but at least they should be legal. In plans I’m working on, I’m calling them “corner convenience.”

Just when you think you’re done thinking back on your thesis project. The below article talks about the importance of small-scale retail/city services such as Arbutus Coffee in Kitsilano for supportive walkable cities. My thesis proposed a Long-term Care for Individuals Living with Dementia in one of Kitsilano’s communities that is home to Arbutus Coffee. Research on Supportive Neighbourhood Characteristics for those living with dementia created the project’s site selection criteria - Sensory Engagement, Accessibility, Character of Place and Active Surroundings. My thesis addressed that building for people with dementia with a sensory approach can benefit us all. For those who have been asking (and I have been delaying answering), link below to my graduating thesis. To my economic development folks - what kind of capital stacking would you have in your pipeline to make this economically viable in your city? I’m thinking a mix of micro revolving loan funds, a local investment fund, NMTC’s (circumstantial) and a well placed BID. We need more financing tools for small scale developers. Talk to me! #CornerConvenience

Over the past couple of days, I have read about 6 or 7 pub closures in and around Glasgow. I think 2 of them were due to landlords retiring, the rest were down to higher costs and reduced patronage. When online shopping started to decimate the high street I, and many others, expected to see city centres as places of leisure and entertainment. With the number of pub and restaurant closures, I wonder what will become of them. What do you think the high streets will look like in 10 years? #sales #keynotespeaker #storytelling

Hotel Managers / Sales Managers: A few shifts in the calendar for December this year vs last year that might have an impact on performance. Full Weekends: 2023 - 5 2024 - 4 The 1st: 2023 - Friday 2024 - Sunday Christmas: 2023 - Monday 2024 - Wednesday NYE: 2023 - Sunday 2024 - Tuesday The caveat to one less full weekend in December this year is that Thanksgiving is one week later this year as well, so, if you see Christmas shopping travelers, one could come to a conclusion they will just squeeze trips in fewer weekends, this assumes people still think of the traditional Christmas shopping time begins post Thanksgiving....not sure if that is the case or not anymore. There are some who might be saying, who shops in person, "everything" is online... That might be the general sentiment out there, but, if you look at new store openings and the lack of available prime retail space, that sentiment might not be accurate, don't let the headlines of store closings scare you, in many cases, they are chains who had too many stores to begin with, you don't need a pharamacy on every corner as an example. New stores are opening at record pace, here's a fact that might shock you, Barnes & Noble has been opening up a lot of new stores, who knew! Don't forget those holiday gift bags for your guests!!
