As we celebrate Pride Month, I’ve been reflecting on why diversity and inclusion in the workplace remain such important topics and what they mean to me personally. I believe that one of the strongest biases that we need to overcome is the “like-me” bias, to ensure that we surround ourselves with different perspectives and experiences. Ensuring diversity at the forefront means giving everyone equal opportunity regardless of their gender, background, sexual orientation - which is fair and results in hiring and promoting the very best people. It’s also been proven over and over again (e.g., https://lnkd.in/eECSZDXX) that a diverse team outperforms an homogeneous one, all other things equal. So, promoting diversity means forming a stronger, better performing team…and inclusion? We should start from inclusion. Promoting diversity in a non-inclusive environment is a recipe for higher attrition at best and harassment at worst. That’s why I’m proud that being part of ABB is to be part of an organization committed to supporting LGBTQ+ communities by creating an inclusive environment that brings people together. It’s our duty to foster a sense of belonging so that our colleagues can bring their authentic selves to work every day. There is still work to be done but I remain committed today and every day to ensuring that everyone can #ComeAsYouAre - https://lnkd.in/ekp5nSGH #PrideMonth #Pride2024 #Diversity #Inclusion #LGBTTQ+ #Equality #ABB #ProcessIndusties #PulpandPaper

This year's theme for South Asian Heritage Month is "Free to Be Me," yet many of us don’t feel safe leaving our homes right now. I had planned to share more content this week celebrating SAHM, but given the events of the last few days, this post has taken a different turn. For now, this is a reminder to all organisations with ethnic minority employees: 💛 Check in on your employees. Allyship is needed right now. 💛 Allow your employees to work from home if they don’t feel safe coming to the office. 💛 Please don’t expect ethnic minority employees to lead your Employee Resource Groups for race discussions right now. It’s not their job, and it’s exhausting. Let this be a reminder for us to keep doing the work to become a more inclusive society. Unfortunately, we still have a long way to go. And finally, let’s not be quick to brush this off as a view held by just the minority or something that will pass. It’s racism, it exists, and it needs addressing.

🌏 Embracing Diversity and Equality: A Journey We All Share 🌏 Imagine going down the street, feeling like you belong, then suddenly someone rejects you based on your appearance. It's a short moment, but it may have a long-term impact—a reminder that, despite our best efforts, we may still be assessed based on our looks rather than our character. Julian Nishizono's TEDx presentation, titled "Equal Treatment and Respect," tells a poignant narrative that resonates well beyond Japan's boundaries. An old lady approached Julian, who was born and raised in Japan, and asked for instructions. But when she saw his face, she paused, understanding he did not resemble the "typical" Japanese person. This basic conversation made him wonder why, despite his Japanese look, he could feel like an alien in his own country. This anecdote serves as a reminder that in many countries, individuals are still assessed based on their looks, country, or origin, rather than their genuine identity and value. But it does not have to be this way. Here's how we can alter the story. 1. Celebrate the Gift of Appearance: Every one of us is unique, with our own mix of cultures, characteristics, and stories. Rather of subscribing to a particular "type," let us embrace the variety that enriches our communities. Whether you have dark or pale complexion, wavy or straight hair, your look is a gift. It is what makes you who you are. And it is a gift to the world. 2. Live Borderless and Fluid: We often create borders between ourselves—us vs. them, insider vs. outsider. However, genuine growth occurs when we think outside these bounds. Let us aspire to be more like water, flexible and adaptable, breaking down the obstacles that divide us. 3. Create safe spaces for everyone: Every individual needs to feel secure and appreciated for who they are. In a world where prejudice still persists, let us be the change-makers who advocate for equality and compassion. 4. Appreciate Each Other: At the heart of a fair society is appreciation—recognizing that we are all unique, but that our differences are what make us human. It is about seeing past the surface and recognizing everyone's common humanity. Ultimately, we're all on this path together. The globe is a parade of unique, beautiful lives all heading in the same direction, aiming for a future where respect and equality are the norm. Let us take this journey together, accepting our diversity, knocking down barriers, and creating a society in which everyone feels like they belong. 🌈 Respect isn’t just given; it’s earned through understanding, compassion, and the willingness to see the humanity in others. 🌈 #Diversity #Inclusion #Equality #Respect #Humanity #WeAreOne
