🔍 Before You Join a Job: What to Consider🔍 Thinking about taking the leap and joining a new company? Before you sign on the dotted line, it's essential to do your homework and ensure it's the right fit for you. Here's a handy guide from an employee's perspective on what to consider before making that career move: 1. Company Culture: Dive deep into the company's culture and values. Do they align with your own? Look beyond the perks and benefits and assess whether you'll feel supported, valued, and motivated within the organization's culture. 2. Opportunities for Growth: Evaluate the company's track record in employee development and advancement. Are there opportunities for growth and career progression? Consider factors like mentorship programs, training opportunities, and promotion paths. 3. Work-Life Balance: Assess the company's stance on work-life balance. Do they offer flexible work arrangements or support initiatives that promote employee well-being? A healthy balance between work and personal life is crucial for long-term satisfaction and productivity. 4. Leadership and Management Style: Take note of the leadership and management style within the organization. Are leaders approachable, supportive, and transparent? Strong leadership sets the tone for the entire company and can significantly impact your experience as an employee. 5. Employee Benefits and Perks: Scrutinize the company's benefits package beyond just salary. Look for perks like health insurance, retirement plans, professional development stipends, and employee discounts. These benefits can enhance your overall compensation package and quality of life. 6. Company Reputation and Stability: Research the company's reputation and financial stability. Are they known for ethical business practices and a commitment to corporate social responsibility? Assessing the company's stability can provide insights into job security and long-term prospects. 7. Feedback from Current and Former Employees: Seek out feedback from current and former employees through platforms like Glassdoor or LinkedIn. Their insights can offer valuable perspectives on the company culture, management style, and overall employee experience. Remember, choosing the right company is a significant decision that can shape your career trajectory and overall happiness. Back when: Who's Who in Advertising; Who's Who in Sales and Marketing; Who's Who in the Midwest; Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America; Who's Who in Communications and the Media. Now: Howls at the Moon.
Does everyone at your workplace STILL get a trophy? Silly question? Not if your newer employee pool is shaping up like most of the rest of our republic. Your future/currently-needed employee pipeline is encountering a growing tide of the "Everyone Gets A Trophy" movement of the last several decades. And that tide will grow even larger and more difficult to handle unless you START to learn how. You know it's happening at your workplace because you and your employees are experiencing can't-miss clues about it. Examples: 1. You have perspective employees with debatable life skills, no meaningful job history, and degrees in who knows what??? asking for six-figure starting salaries; 2. Many can't read an analog clock, work a dial phone, change a flat tire, understand what the recirculating button on their automobile does, look you in the eye for more than two seconds (or less) without slumping and focusing on anything but you; 3. Heck, some of them even brought their mothers to their job interviews, didn't they? They demand "work/life balance," and yet, if you ask them to define what that means, what's in it for them, and what your business should expect from that, you'll get a can't-miss blank stare. They expect to work where they wish to work regardless of what your company wants. They expect relaxation/stress reduction areas and activities IN your workplace. Gourmet coffee? Yep. Catered meals? Yep. Thirty-hour work week? Yep. Six weeks vacation to start? Yep? And you know what? A lot of them are getting a lot of these things? Don't you wonder how that can possibly be happening? I won't be able to give you all the possible answers to that last question, but I can suggest some areas for you to start exploring, changing, addressing, fixing. First, understand this new wave is getting some or much of what they're asking for because your employees throughout your organization have little or no understanding or training in negotiation skills? And that's at ALL levels of most organizations. Ignore your counting and checking staff and resume MEANINGFUL SKILLS TRAINING efforts from top to bottom. With minimal training improvements your folks should at least be able to mount some effective reactions to Negotiation 101 demands they are currently failing to thwart. This new wave's tendency to demand (because many have so seldom heard, "No!") will continue to prove difficult, again if you don't at least START addressing yet another issue this new wave brings. Virtually no one in most organizations has skills appropriate for handling difficult employees. Yet another area to insert into any new organizational development strategies you should consider. In closing, realize this wave will either help your organization succeed or sink it. It's up to those of you owning or managing businesses to do what HAS to be done. After all, as an old and trite saying goes, "Do you really think it's a good idea to let the inmates run the asylum? #WinningAtWork
